Apple unveils an Amazon Echo competitor

As if you didn't rely on Apple devices in your day-to-day life already, the Cupertino company just announced HomePod, its entry into the smart speaker arena. The Apple HomePod is a smart speaker that features integration with Apple Music and Siri. It will allow users to talk to Siri, Apple's digital assistant, while at home and costs US$349 - nearly double the price of most competing products.

Apple's Phil Schiller said the device combines a great compact speaker with a smart speaker.

After "reinventing" the watch, Apple is now looking to change the home speaker game after revealing "HomePod" - its new Siri-powered wireless speaker - at its Worldwide Developer Conference today.

Following in Google's footsteps, Siri will also be able to translate and speak phrases from six languages, with more coming later, Apple said. "The HomePod has seven tweeters and a 4" woofer inside, all of which run off an A8 chip, which is the very same one found in your iPhone.

HomePod has spatial awareness so it can detect the room its in and optimise sound. Apple Music serves up the 40 million songs - probably an incentive for you to become one of the more than 27 million subscribers and counting.

If Apple unveils a rival to internet-connected speakers from Amazon and Google, it wouldn't be the first time that Apple hops on the bandwagon of a technology product popularized by a competitor.

Who Will Be Best To Negotiate Brexit: May Or Corbyn?
The Prime Minister promised further investment and a new Mental Health Act to end workplace discrimination. She said she would "deliver on the will of the people" and also "make sure we make a success" of Brexit.

HomePod wants to be the best of both worlds, without being that much more expensive than some of its key competitors: The Apple-made speaker will cost consumers $349, and ship in December in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. Pricing in the United Kingdom hasn't been confirmed, but with a U.S. price of $350 it'll likely be somewhere between £330 and £370.

Apple also unveiled a key content deal when CEO Tim Cook said that Amazon Prime Video, long absent from the Apple TV product, would come to Apple devices such as the TV, iPhones and iPad later this year.

Following Echo being a runaway success, Google copied it with its Home assistant. So now you can ask Siri to turn on the lights or lock the door without moving a muscle.

The device will be available in white and space grey and retail for $349.

They will be able to check sports scores, set alarms, timers and reminders, and control compatible smart devices - all features that were previously debuted by Amazon and Google.
