Anti-Sharia Rally Prompts Lively Protest In San Bernardino

The demonstrations were held in more than two dozen USA cities, including Seattle, New York and San Bernardino, Calif.

The counter-protest group, Seattle Stands With Our Muslim Neighbors, disagreed, saying on its Facebook page that ACT for America is "a recognized Islamophobic hate group". I saw people on both sides of the street actually wearing uniforms, a lot of military militia-style fatigues on the pro-Trump anti-Sharia side of the street.

In many cities, the ACT protestors were outnumbered by counter protestors who said the protests were fueling racism and anti-Islamic hatred. Out of the seven, two face assault charges.

The Lansing Police Department had about a half dozen officers present, and blocked off part of South Pennsylvania Avenue for a short period of time around 10:30 a.m.as the counter-protesters made their way from Miller Road.

A Denver protest Saturday over fears extremist interpretations of Islamic law will one day become the law of the land ended up producing yelling and insults, some scuffles and at least four arrests.

A group that claims Islamic Sharia law is a threat to American values is holding a demonstration at Seattle City Hall on Saturday.

The organisation said it opposes discrimination and supports the rights of those subject to Sharia or Islamic law.

ACT for America was headquartered in Virginia Beach until about a month ago, has been labeled an extremist organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

It wasn't immediately clear what prompted the clash between protesters and counter-protesters in Seattle, and the violence appeared to subside relatively quickly.

A New York March Against Sharia supporter stated the march had "nothing to do with religion or nothing like that", though they also added "If [Muslims] don't like it they can go back to their countries and deal with it there", according to the New York Post. State Sen. Michael Williams, a Republican candidate for governor, spoke to the rally, according to his spokesman, Seth Weathers.

No area of the US has legally implemented sharia, despite false reports on social media that Dearborn, Mich., enacted it.

ACT for America, a self-described grassroots organisation focusing on national security, staged the so-called "anti-Sharia" rallies in New York, Chicago, Boston, Denver and Seattle, as well as many smaller cities. The Minnesota State Patrol arrested about a half-dozen people. "I would say, in fact, most Muslims don't want sharia", said Markus Fasel of West St. Paul.

But the counter-protesters say if the opponents of Shariah law are truly concerned about religious intolerance, they need look no further than the mirror. And to no one's surprise, the rally approved of President Donald Trump's calls to impose restrictions on immigrants and refugees.
