Another police shooting acquittal worries black gun owners

The world learned of Philando Castile's death through a Facebook livestream launched by his girlfriend seconds after he was shot by a Minnesota police officer. That said, by arresting 18 protesters, Minnesota authorities have stressed that misconduct during the protest for Castile will not be tolerated.

"I don't doubt that Officer Yanez is a decent person, but he made a awful mistake from our perspective, and that's what this case was about".

On Friday, June 16 a jury acquitted Yanez of all charges in the shooting that left Castlie dead.

An attorney for Yanez, Earl Gray, praised the verdict. Castile had a permit for the weapon. After handing over his insurance card, Castile told him, "Sir, I do have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me". Yanez said he feared for his life.

Glenda Hatchett, a lawyer who represented Valerie Castile, said her son had suffered a "tragic, tragic needless death". We're going back down to 1969.

John Choi, the Ramsey County prosecutor assigned to the case, told reporters following the verdict that Castile "did nothing that justified the taking of his life". Like many who expressed alarm at the verdict, they were critical of the makeup of the jury: eight men (one black) and four women (also one black).

The roadside memorial at the site of Castile's death saw an influx of visitors, flowers, and signs. According to a squad vehicle video, the 29-year-old officer asked Castile for a driver's license and proof insurance.

Castile's mother, Valerie, who addressed the crowd Friday after leaving the court, blasted the decision. Others include, Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La., Eric Garner, who was held in a chokehold by police, and died in NY, and Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager, who was shot by an officer in Ferguson, Mo. A Minnesota police officer was cleared earlier Friday in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile, a blac.

Anyone could see the aftermath, and millions did: When Philando Castile was shot and killed by a Minnesota police officer during what started as a traffic stop on July 6, 2016, his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, whipped out her phone to live stream what came next.

Meanwhile, in a statement on the verdict, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman called Castile "a son of St. Paul - a graduate of Central High School, and a dedicated employee at J.J. Hill Montessori, where he was loved by his students and co-workers". Despite the acquittal, the city of St. Anthony announced that Yanez would be dismissed.

"We can also know that the demonization of people who use drugs gives license to the trampling of their civil and human rights, and provides a climate of impunity for law enforcement and others who commit acts of unjustifiable violence". The officer ordered Castile not to draw it out, with Castile repeatedly saying he was not reaching for it. Yanez shot him seven times, claiming he feared for his safety.
