After Georgia special election, another loss for Democrats

Failed Democratic candidate in the Georgia special election Jon Ossoff decried the rise of money in politics Tuesday before he completed the most expensive congressional race in us history.

More than $50 million was spent on the race, which made it the most expensive congressional election in history.

Democrats came close but still lost two other contested special elections earlier this year for Republican-held seats in conservative Kansas and Montana, and the outcomes in Georgia and SC could put a crimp in the party's fundraising and candidate recruitment.

Republican Karen Handel declared victory in Georgia's 6th Congressional District with a promise that she'll work to gain the confidence of voters who backed her Democratic opponent.

"Democrats would do much better as a party if they got together with Republicans on Healthcare, Tax Cuts, Security", Trump tweeted out. What's more, the Democrat was a 30-year-old, first-time candidate, who didn't actually live in the district, running against a Republican who'd already been elected to statewide office. "I certainly understand the attention from the press around the country".

According to CNBC, Trump won this district's presidential votes by only 1.5 points.

Ossoff then said that the majority of Handel's outside funding came from Washington, D.C., whereas his funding came largely from California Democrats. "So thank you, thank you for the most extraordinary experience I've ever had the honor of being a part of", Ossoff said during his Tuesday night concession speech to a crowd of hundreds of supporters that gathered at a hotel in the southern portion of the district.

Chelsea legend Hasselbaink backs Conte decision to move Costa
Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski has also been linked with a move to Chelsea as Costa's replacement. He still has two years remaining on his £185,000-a-week deal.

Spending on the Georgia race reached at least $57 million, almost twice the previous record, according to the Center for Responsive Politics watchdog group. 52 percent to Ossoff's 48 percent, disrupted those hopes of taking the seat left vacant by Republican Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price.

Democrats said they had turned a conservative stronghold into a competitive district.

"This is not the outcome any of us were hoping for, but this is the beginning of something much bigger than us".

But the defeat was sure to prompt soul-searching in a party that is shut out of power in Washington and has steadily lost influence at the state level in recent years. Despite a money advantage and a sour feeling towards the current administration, Ossoff was unable to pull off his own upset in the red state, with Handel grabbing the victory and protecting the seat for the GOP.

But Republican Ron Estes defeated Democrat James Thompson by just 7 points in April's election, which is the closest Democrats have been to winning the seat since 1996.

On both sides of the political spectrum, outside groups have spent millions to try and get an edge in Congress, but Democrats continue to come up short.
