7 dead, heavy damage to US Navy ship in collision

AUTHORITIES in Japan are investigating a purported half an hour lapse in the reporting of the deadly collision between a US Navy Destroyer and a container ship.

The U.S. coast guard investigation is one several into the incident on Saturday involving the guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald and the much larger ACX Crystal.

"We owe it to our families and the Navy to understand what happened", he said. "You have to realize majority are 18, 19 and 20-year-olds living with guilt".

Daniel Kahle, a Navy veteran who served with Rehm while deployed to the Persian Gulf during the Iraq War, told the newspaper he hadn't spoken to his former colleague in years but will remember him as "a great guy" who always seemed to be smiling. Seven American sailors died in the crash.

Their bodies were found a day later when the ship returned to port and divers scoured damaged areas of the 154-meter (500-foot) USS Fitzgerald, which was commissioned in 1995 and deployed in the Iraq war in 2003.

Yeoman 3rd Class Shingo Alexander Douglass, 25, was from San Diego and Fire Controlman 2nd Class Carlosvictor Ganzon Sibayan, 23, was from Chula Vista.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Sean Stackley says the Navy is deeply saddened and promised a full investigation into the collision.

"The Fitzgerald crew responded professionally as all sailors are expected to fight the damage sustained to their ship", Aucoin said at the conference.

Vice Admiral Joseph P. Aucoin, the Seventh Fleet commander, was asked on Sunday if damage on the starboard side indicated the US ship could have been at fault, but he declined to speculate on the cause of the collision. He said considering the damage that was done to the ship, many more people could have died.

"The water flow is tremendous, and so there wasn't a lot of time in those spaces that were open to the sea...", he said. The 7th Fleet has since confirmed the sailors are in stable condition and are being treated for lacerations and bruises at the Naval Hospital Yokosuka.

Earlier, the 7th Fleet said the US ship sustained damage on its starboard side and experienced flooding in some spaces.

A statement from the us navy fleet said that the crash caused "significant damage and associated flooding to two berthing spaces, a machinery space, and the radio room".

Canada to beef up defense spending
"This policy is an ambitious yet realistic plan that outlines the Government of Canada's Defence priorities". Some of the money will be deployed immediately, much will be delayed until after the next election.

The Fitzgerald's captain, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, were injured in the collision and were transported by helicopter to a naval hospital in Yokosuka.

"A second medevac was performed for two Sailors with minor injuries". He was in his cabin at the time of the collision.

"Right now we are focused on two things: the safety of the ship and the well-being of the Sailors", Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said in the Navy's statement.

The accident, in which a 29,060-ton container ship slammed into a 8,315-ton destroyer, is under investigation.

Mia Sykes, the mother of Fitzgerald crewmember Brayden Harden, told the AP that crewmembers from the two damaged berthing compartments repeatedly dove back into the flooding spaces in an attempt to save their crewmates.

Footage from Japanese broadcaster NHK showed a sharp horizontal cut across the bow area, which looked like a shark's mouth.

"You can't see most of the damage", he explained.

Three collisions between large ships have been reported in the past five years.

Meguro said the ship was "operating as usual" until the collision at 1:30 a.m., as shown on a ship-tracking service that the company uses.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a sympathy message to President Donald Trump today.

"I express my heartfelt solidarity to America at this hard time".
