Yankees place closer Aroldis Chapman on DL with rotator cuff inflammation

The Yankees placed Aroldis Chapman on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday with shoulder inflammation, with general manager Brian Cashman expecting the flamethrower to be out around a month.

"You're probably looking at a minimum of a month if everything goes right", Cashman said.

"I was shocked", Girardi said.

Chapman is 1-0 with a 3.55 ERA and seven saves in eight chances this year. "He looked good this spring and has had no issues, and I think he feels it's similar to what he experienced with the Reds (in 2011)". An MRI taken Saturday morning revealed that Chapman has no structural damage in his shoulder, sources told ESPN's Marly Rivera.

According to MLB's Statcast, Chapman's average fastball velocity has slightly dipped from 100.9 miles per hour previous year to 98.2 in 2017.

He showed a sign of a possible problem on April 26, when he needed 33 pitches to get through the ninth inning at Boston.

It was hard not to notice Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman shaking his left throwing arm during his ninth-inning, mop-up appearance in Friday night's 5-1 loss to the Houston Astros.

In his previous outing, the lefty surrendered three runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Cubs, blowing his first save opportunity of the season.

Chapman insisted he was fine and was allowed to stay in the game for one more batter. until Astros second baseman Jose Altuve singled in Houston's fifth run. Regardless of your view of Chapman, he was a pivotal reason that the Cubs won their first World Series in over 108 years last season. Last year, he had 40 saves in 72 appearances between the Yankees and the Cubs.
