With Merkel and PM, France's new president wastes no time

Selecting Philippe as prime minister is seen as a way to bring in more support from the center-right, which Macron will need to push through his proposed economic reforms, according to the BBC.

French President Emmanuel Macron met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Monday, being greeted on a red carpet outside the chancellery with military honors on a busy first full day in office that started with his naming 46-year-old lawmaker Edouard Philippe as his new prime minister.

Despite her crushing defeat to Macron, Le Pen is counting on her record high voter count - more than 10.6 million - to propel her party into parliament, as well as bidding to take in "electoral orphans" unsatisfied by Macron and feeling betrayed by the mainstream right, Bay said.

Last week, the new party announced "a list of 428 candidates for June's elections, half of whom were women", the broadcaster says.

France's youngest ever president has already attracted dozens of Socialist MPs to his side, triggering a major realignment in French politics that has left the traditional parties floundering.

Like Macron, Philippe is a product of France's elite ENA college who once worked in the private sector and has little truck with the country's fraying left-right divide.

Mr Macron said that he would work with Mrs Merkel on a "road map", and that they needed to work on "deep reforms that are necessary and need common work".

The fervently pro-European Macron also said he would help rebuild the flagging European Union.

Speaking in Berlin on his first foreign visit since his inauguration on Sunday, and at his first joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he also dispelled the idea circulating in German media that he was in favour of turning national debts of euro zone countries into euro-zone debt. "Don't give full powers to Mr. Macron and his prime minister".

After campaigning for Socialist prime minister Michel Rocard as a youth, he switched to the right, becoming a close ally of centre-right former prime minister Alain Juppe.

Philippe, the mayor of the Normandy port of Le Havre, is a trained lawyer and an author of political thrillers.

A staunch European integrationist, Macron pledged after taking office on Sunday to restore France's standing on the world stage, strengthen national self-confidence and heal divisions that the bitterly fought presidential campaign had opened up.

"We need more pragmatism, less bureaucracy and a Europe that protects our citizens".

For far-right leader Marine Le Pen, Macron's rival for the presidency, the selection of Philippe reflects a continuation of the system she hoped to break.

Cazeneuve was the final prime minister of former President Francois Hollande, Macron's predecessor, holding the job for five months.

In Berlin, Macron will push for deeper ties in the 28-member European Union to help it overcome the imminent departure of Britain.

Radical leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon, who came fourth in the presidential election with nearly 20% of the vote, called on voters not to "give full powers to Mr Macron".

But the Frenchman's calls for the eurozone to have its own budget have received a cool response from Germany, which fears it would be forced to pay the lion's share.

However for this to work, Macron would have to make domestically hard changes to France's labor costs and taxes, now among the highest in Europe. "It's not realistic", German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told Le Figaro newspaper.

Juppe said he would be backing LR lawmakers in the mid-June elections, and not Macron's candidates.
