United States warplanes launch airstrikes against regime forces in Syria

The US-led worldwide coalition has confirmed that it struck Syrian pro-regime forces near the Syrian border area of Al-Tanf close to Jordan and Iraq.

One of the US officials said the strikes near the town of At Tanf destroyed at least one tank and a bulldozer, and another said it followed warning shots by USA aircraft meant to dissuade the fighters from advancing further.

He said: "We are not increasing our role in the Syrian civil war".

Although one of CNN's sources said it remained unknown whether the American planes only fired warning shots, a second us defense official said an airstrike "did hit the convoy after the vehicles continued toward the base".

US-led coalition jets have launched air strikes in Syria, hitting convoy of Syrian and Iranian-backed militias that were heading towards the Tanf base in southern Syria where United States special forces are based, reports say. "But we will defend our troops", Mattis said, when asked about the strikes.

There is an escalating battle for turf these days as pro-Assad militias - many of them from Iran, some militants attached to Hezbollah - attempt to secure a highway that runs from Damascus to Baghdad and eventually to Tehran.

James Comey Literally Tried to Hide Behind a Curtain to Avoid Trump
Rosenstein fielded questions in the closed session for more than an hour, but many senators left the briefing unsatisfied. Congressional committees are eager for Comey's testimony following Trump's unsuspected firing of him last week.

Media reports suggested that Syrian rebels have voiced concerns over the Syrian army getting "too close" to the US Special Forces' base in At Tanf.

The U.S. -led coalition did not signal it would cede ground around Tanf.

"The new US strike on government troops in Syria is a continuation of Washington's non-constructive policy", said Leonid Slutsky, the head of the International Affairs Committee of the State Duma, the lower chamber of the Russian parliament. On top of that Tomahawk missile strike last month in central Syria in response to Assad's forces use of chemical weapons, the message ought to be clear - there's a new sheriff in town.

"The agreed upon deconfliction zone agreement remains in effect", the statement said.

A CNN reporter in Washington that was briefed by U.S. officials said a convoy of 20 pro-regime vehicles was headed toward Al-Tanf on Wednesday vehicles, searching vehicles and buildings along the way.
