The manifesto also sees the party pledge "to be the first generation to leave the environment in a better state than we inherited it" and as such promises to produce "a comprehensive 25-Year Environment Plan" that charts how the United Kingdom can improve its environment post-Brexit and "take control of our environmental legislation again".

Protestors gathered outside the industrial mill chosen as the launch venue for May's keynote speech, many chanting anti-government messages and waving banners objecting to Conservative party proposals.

The manifesto confirms that a Tory Brexit would take Britain out of the European single market and customs unions.

"The next five years are the most challenging that Britain has faced in my lifetime".

May, who became prime minister shortly after Britain voted to leave the European Union in June previous year, had already indicated that she wanted to clamp down on excessive pay and foreign takeovers that led to job losses and threatened the rights of workers.

The assertion that "our responsibility to one another is greater than the rights we hold as individuals" suggests the prime minister could be more of a Tony Blair fan than she has previously let on. If we get Brexit right we can use this moment of change. "That is the real prize, because for too many people life is simply much harder than many seem to realise".

In media questions later, May responded by expanding on her vision for Britain, again giving little detail.

She also confirmed an end to the pension triple lock which guarantees a minimum annual rise in state pensions, to take on "inter-generational unfairness".

Net migration — the difference between the number of people moving to Britain and those leaving — was 273,000 in the year to September 2016, and has not been below 100,000 in 20 years.

Overseas students will remain in the immigration statistics but the manifesto sets out plans to heighten requirements for students hoping to remain in the country to work after their course has finished.

The blueprint also says spending on defense will be increased by at least 0.5 percent more than inflation every year, with a commitment to meet the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation target of spending at least 2 percent of GDP on defense.

The manifesto also says the amount of money people can earn before paying any income tax will raise to 12,500 pounds (16,300 USA dollars) and corporation tax paid by businesses will fall to 17 percent by 2020.

To the irritation of some conservative evangelicals, the Conservatives also promise to "strengthen the enforcement of equalities law" and say landlords and businesses who deny services on the basis of "ethnicity, religion or gender" will be "properly investigated and prosecuted".

The Conservatives are also pledging to continue a programme of "strategic national investments", including HS2, Northern Powerhouse Rail and the expansion of Heathrow Airport, and to continue to develop the strategic road network, "providing extra lanes on our motorways and improving key routes whilst also paying attention to parts of the country left behind because of poor transport connections".

Secondly, people in both settings will only have to contribute to care costs from their capital above a floor of £100,000.

The manifesto promises more money for schools, paid for by replacing free lunches for all children during their first three years at primary school, with free breakfasts.
