Trump's 'witch hunt' statement deemed 'false' by Salem's representative

"However, I believe that we still need an independent commission to conduct a truly independent investigation in light of the president's actions to pressure James Comey to end the FBI's examination of Michael Flynn". Trump yet again called the entire investigation a "witch hunt" and stated there was no collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation, but he did add a disclaimer this time.

"Let the chips fall where they may", Faso said in a telephone interview.

Mueller is the man Rosenstein tapped Wednesday to head the U.S. Justice Department's investigation into whether anyone on Trump's campaign colluded with Russian operatives who sought to interfere with the 2016 presidential election.

Senators said that Rosenstein steered clear of specifics while making clear that Mueller has wide latitude to pursue the investigation wherever it leads, including potentially criminal charges.

The revelation by Rosenstein "means that the letter that the president sent us is not accurate", Murphy said, referring to Trump's statement attributing the firing to Rosenstein's memo.

As House majority leader Kevin McCarthy said a year ago in a recorded conversation with Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republican lawmakers, "I think Putin pays" Trump. Both Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken attended the highly unusual closed-door briefing by Rosenstein. Tim Scott, R-S.C. "I do think that the special prosecutor provides a sense of calm and confidence perhaps for the American people, which is incredibly important".

The appointment gives Mueller, who led the Federal Bureau of Investigation through the September 11 terrorist attacks and served under presidential administrations of both parties, sweeping powers to investigate whether Trump campaign associates colluded with the Kremlin to influence the outcome in his behalf, as well as the authority to prosecute any crimes uncovered during the probe.

Rosenstein was originally invited by the two Senate leaders, Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Democrat Chuck Schumer of NY, to explain Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey. ABC News said that Trump's comment was in response to a question from Muir. And during a lunch with reporters, he said the special counsel appointment is bad for the country.

Because it was a closed briefing, it's unclear exactly how Rosenstein described how he knew Trump would fire Comey.

The US justice department appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller to lead the investigation.

"You're pretty well knocked out of the game", he said about the ongoing high-profile congressional probes, "and that's probably the way it should be".

There was no word on what that record might entail, a question many were likely to raise in light of Trump's recent warning to Comey that he had "better hope" there were no tapes of a discussion they'd had. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he is determined to press forward with public hearings.

The surprise announcement to hand the probe over to Mr Mueller, who commands deep bipartisan respect, was a striking shift for Mr Trump's justice department, which had resisted calls from Democrats for an outside prosecutor.
