Trump to interview Joe Lieberman for Federal Bureau of Investigation director role

The opening to lead the nation's top law enforcement agency comes after Trump abruptly fired James Comey last week, setting off a firestorm of controversy in the nation's capital.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein conducted interviews with a number of candidates over the weekend.

A November 25 news release from Trump's transition team quoted Lieberman praising Trump's selection of K.T. McFarland as deputy national security adviser.

Of those on the latest list, Lieberman might be the most controversial - even though he identified as a Democrat for most of his political career and was even the party's nominee for vice president in 2000.

President Donald Trump will interview four candidates for the job of Federal Bureau of Investigation director Wednesday, among them former Sen. Trump has said he could name a successor before he departs Friday on his first overseas trip as president.

In this occasional series, we will bring you up to speed on the biggest national security stories of the week . He also denied he urged Comey to drop the Flynn investigation, telling reporters, "No, no".

Whoever Trump picks will have to win Senate confirmation, and that will likely require demonstrating a willingness to be independent from Trump.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go", Trump told Comey, according to a memo Comey wrote at the time, excerpts of which leaked to reporters on Tuesday.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called Lieberman a "pillar of credibility." Sen. He campaigned for Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton, in 2016 after endorsing Republican presidential nominee John McCain in 2008.

Gore/Lieberman ended up losing the 2000 presidential election to then-presidential candidate George W. Bush and candidate for vice president, Dick Cheney.

Several candidates have withdrawn from consideration: Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C.; Cornyn; Alice Fisher, the former head of the Justice Department's criminal division; and Michael Garcia, a former US attorney from Manhattan. Comey was overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russia's role in the presidential election, including ties between Russian government officials and Trump associates. John Cornyn of Texas, both Republicans; Alice Fisher, the former head of the Justice Department's criminal division; and Michael Garcia, a former USA attorney from Manhattan.
