Trump must turn over any tapes, lawmakers agree

WASHINGTON ― Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Sunday that "our institutions are under assault internally" by President Donald Trump, who is "eroding" the American system of "checks and balances" on political power.

Trump took to Twitter to respond, writing "Cryin" Chuck Schumer stated recently, "I do not have confidence in him (James Comey) any longer.' Then acts so indignant".

Asked about the differing statements he and his White House offered, Trump said, "Well, that's an interesting situation", and admitted he toyed with the idea to stop White House press briefings. "If there are any tapes of this conversation, they need to be turned over", Graham told NBC's "Meet the Press" program.

The interview on Fox comes after a week of intense scrutiny of Trump following his unexpected dismissal of Comey.

Mike Rogers, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent and Republican congressman from MI who was chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

In a sudden move late Tuesday night, Trump fired Comey, who had six more years left in his term.

Last week, he warned Comey in a tweet as saying "better hope that there are no tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking the press".

Reports also emerged that Rump - er, I mean Trump - went ballistic over Congressional testimony from former acting Attorney General Sally Yates (another troublesome employee fired after she pissed off the president), who among other things reported that she had advised the White House in January that disgraced National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had been having inappropriate contacts with Russian officials.

Yankees retire Derek Jeter's No. 2
Twenty of Jeter's former teammates, managers and coaches were in attendance, though longtime frenemy Alex Rodriguez was not there. Anyway: On Sunday, the couple stepped out for a ceremony to retire Derek's jersey number at the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

That's an utter disconnect from the inside-the-Beltway parsing of each development, and the Democratic outrage over Trump's possible obstruction of justice - complete with references to Watergate and impeachment.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said he would block a new nominee to replace Comey until an independent prosecutor was appointed.

Comey's ouster Tuesday, while his FBI led an investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, raises the potential that a man long defined by his independent streak, willingness to buck protocol and even a flair for the dramatic could resurface to publicly rebut White House efforts to smear his reputation.

Trump is described as livid over seeing his name mentioned constantly in connection with the investigation when, according to the president himself and several lawmakers, he is not a target of the probe.

Whoever the pick is, the former agent said they would have to be "pretty strong-willed" and "just like Comey". Eight people reportedly interviewed for the job yesterday. John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate.

Meanwhile, a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released on Sunday found that 29% of Americans approve of Trump's decision to fire Comey, while 38% disapprove. He said he is privately urging Republicans to voice their concerns publicly because "this is an issue of country, not party".

Graham dismissed calls by Democrats for a special prosecutor or independent commission to probe the Russian Federation allegations, saying that ongoing congressional probes and the Justice Department investigation should suffice.

Five days later, Mr. Comey held an unusual press conference announcing the results of his agency's Clinton email probe and said that "no reasonable prosecutor would bring a case" against the former Secretary of State. "And the public has an absolute right to be assured this investigation is thorough and without political taint".
