Trump, Hollywood React as Macron Wins French Election

The French are riven by anxieties about terrorism and chronic unemployment, anxious about the cultural, economic and religious impact of immigration and fear France's ability to compete against giants like China. The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, was one of the first to congratulate Mr Macron, welcoming his success as a "victory for Europe".

Less than 12 hours before voters went to cast their ballots the Macron campaign claimed they were the victims of a "massive and coordinated" hack. Le Pen, leader of the National Front, was one of the first to congratulate Trump on his own shock victory in November, and her nativist, nationalistic message carried echoes of Trump's anti-immigrant campaign rhetoric. This vote followed similar elections in Austria and the Netherlands.

The euro, European stocks, and government bonds all moved higher last week in anticipation of a Macron victory, and that helped explain the muted reaction to Sunday's vote.

Separately, Philippot said on TF1 television: "The National Front is going to evolve, it's going to use this rallying energy".

'I would like thank the 11 million French people who gave me their voice and their confidence.

As hundreds of people were killed in terror attacks in France, her anti-immigration stance and emphasis on security seemed to appeal to voters.

Emmanuel Macron beat Marine Le Pen at the presidential polls by a decisive margin to become the youngest president-elect of France.

Wenger Hopeful Of Top Four Arsenal Finish After Win Over United
They were walking the streets with heads low. "So finally today they sing, they (swing) the scarves - it's nice for them". Normal is win, lose, draw. "I don't think we have any chance of finishing top four in the Premier League".

"I am happy with the result of Emmanuel Macron being elected president, which constitutes a veritable relief for all our nation and for the Jewish community of France", Joel Mergui, the president of the Consistoire, wrote Sunday evening in a statement by his group, which is responsible for providing religious services to Jews. A believer in free-market economy, he is calling for an economic reform opposed by labor unions and advocates of France's relatively generous welfare amenities.

Opinion polls indicate they will pick Emmanuel Macron, a 39-year-old ex-economy minister who wants to bridge the left-right divide, resisting an anti-establishment tide that has seen Britons vote to leave the European Union and Americans choose Donald Trump as US president.

National Front rising star Marion Marechal-Le Pen, Marine Le Pen's niece, said that the party had lessons to learn from the presidential election and its message on the euro had been misunderstood.

"I call on all patriots to join us", Le Pen said.

On the left, the Socialist Party imploded, its candidate abandoned by voters who wanted to punish Hollande, France's most unpopular president since World War II.

"Politics is not a game that you win every time", he said.

Outside the Louvre, Macron's jubilant supporters sang "We have won, we have won" while waving French flags as they waited for their new president to arrive.
