Trump considering Joe Lieberman for Federal Bureau of Investigation director

President Donald Trump waves as he walks across the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Wednesday, May 17, 2017, following his short trip on Marine One from nearby Andrews Air Force Base, Md. A Justice Department official said the attorney general has now also met with them. It was not immediately clear how many candidates Trump plans to interview.

Whoever Trump picks will have to win Senate confirmation, and that will likely require demonstrating a willingness to be independent from Trump.

Between Donald Trump's sudden decision to fire FBI Director James Comey last week and former agency head Robert Mueller's appointment as special prosecutor for all things Russian Federation, the "Bureau" has received a lot of publicity lately. And seeing as how the president - who is not happy with Mueller's new gig - must choose Comey's replacement rather quickly, they're about to get a lot more.

Lieberman previously served as a senator from CT and was Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 presidential election. He was a Democratic candidate for Vice President in 2000 with Al Gore and ran for president in 2004.

Legislators on both sides of the aisle have expressed wariness about having a politician lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and a Senate Democratic leadership aide said Lieberman would not be exempt from that.

Trump denies Comey allegations, collusion with Russian Federation
House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan stuck to that line and told reporters on Wednesday he still has confidence in Trump. They asked the White House to turn over 'records of interactions with former Director Comey, including any audio recordings'.

Some of the appeal of Lieberman to Trump may be in a personal connection.

When asked if he'd take the position, Leiberman said he'd "rather not say". Lieberman was the first Democratic senator to criticize former President Bill Clinton publicly during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Keating earned a law degree from OU, and has also worked under former presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He was the lead agent on the Oklahoma City federal building bombing case in 1995, when Keating was governor, and he was the FBI's on-scene commander after the September 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon.

McCabe seems an unlikely choice.

Lieberman gave reporters a thumbs-up as he left the White House on Wednesday and said he and Trump had a "good meeting".
