Top House Democrat Pelosi says independent Russian Federation probe still needed

After Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey for the latter's handling of Russia's meddling role in U.S. election and after Comey claimed that Trump had asked him to drop the probe into his former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn's Russian Federation connection, the Trump Administration and the White House faced a barrage of questions.

The appointment of Robert Mueller III, the former head of the FBI, as a special counsel to head the Russian Federation investigation was announced late Wednesday. He denied this as well.

Trump tweeted early Thursday morning that he was the victim of a "witch hunt" and expressed anger that a special counsel hadn't ever been appointed to investigate Hillary Clinton or former president Barack Obama for their "illegal acts".

President Donald Trump said that the appointment of a special counsel for the ongoing investigation into his campaign's ties to Russian Federation "divides the country".

She said the counsel, former FBI Director Robert Mueller, would still be subject to supervision by Trump's Justice Department.

Blumenthal said Trump's angry tweets were an attempt to intimidate a newly appointed prosecutor who will investigate whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia's attempt to influence the USA elections. Trump tweeted. "This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"

"I believe it hurts our country terribly, because it shows we're a divided, mixed-up, not-unified country", Trump said later at a luncheon with a group of television news anchors.

Trump fired Flynn on February 14 for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the extent of his conversations a year ago with Russia's ambassador. Mueller, who is well-regarded by both parties, was a name welcomed by Democrats and by some Republicans, as well.

President Donald Trump is facing a crisis he can't manage with a tweet or a taunt.

North Korea has also launched satellites into orbit on long-range rockets that share some of the same technology as missiles. South Korea's newly-elected president said Wednesday that the possibility of a conflict with North Korea is high.

Mueller will take over the FBI investigation.

Though the Mueller appointment has obviously raised the legal and political stakes for Trump, it is widely thought that Trump is unlikely to be impeached over the current political turmoil.

The White House initially said last week that Trump was prompted to fire Comey after reading the Rosenstein letter.

"I think the people in the rest of the world do not have the time to pay attention to what's happening domestically here", said Tillerson who's accompanying Trump on the trip.

Rosenstein will most certainly be asked by senators about his decision to launch an independent investigation, as well as the circumstances surrounding the memo he wrote about Comey.

Despite the appointment, at least three congressional committees are continuing their investigations, leading to some turf warfare and sniping as the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee both sought to lay claim to testimony from Comey, while the House Oversight Committee also hoped to hear from the former director. Trump later deleted and retweeted that statement to correct the spelling of "counsel".

A Republican political analyst, Evan Siegfried, told VOA that until Mueller's appointment, "there was zero integrity in this investigation". Mueller said the appointment was "necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome".

"In my capacity as acting Attorney General, I determined that it is in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a Special Counsel to assume responsibility for this matter", Rosenstein said. Rosenstein threatened to resign from the Justice Department because of the explanation that White House officials were giving reporters about why the firing happened.

Trump has repeatedly denied any collusion between his campaign and the Kremlin, amid accusations from U.S. intelligence that Russian President Vladimir Putin orchestrated a sweeping campaign to tilt the vote in the Republican's favor.
