Times Square crash driver 'heard voices'

A smashed auto sits on the corner of Broadway and 45th Street in New York's Times Square after ploughing through a crowd of pedestrians at lunchtime on Thursday, May 18, 2017.

The 26-year-old driver from the Bronx was taken into custody and was undergoing tests for alcohol, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

23 people were hurt in the crash, including Portage native, Alyssa Elsman who died from her injuries.

He reportedly told officers he had smoked synthetic marijuana before charging into the bustling tourist destination, where 18-year-old Alyssa Elsman had been visiting with her mother and 13-year-old sister. They are awaiting further blood tests results for multiple drugs, including PCP.

Some of the suspect's friends told the police that he had "psychological issues" and had been behaving weird since he came back from active duty in the Navy.

"She was just the most awesome person, she didn't have a mean bone in her body", Lemke said, "She loved everyone and everything".

But when the former USA navy veteran escaped his burning vehicle and lunged at terrified witnesses, those who had just watched the carnage unfold ran toward the man with no regard for their safety in an attempt to apprehend him before he could hurt anyone else.

He was arrested a year later at a naval base in Jacksonville, Florida, where officials said he attacked a cab driver, shouted "my life is over", and threatened to kill police, according to court records.

And on Wednesday, community businesses, organizations and enthusiasts will have booths and treat stations set up across Anchorage. Since 2013, the city has added nine miles of protected bike lanes including on Plymouth Avenue N., 3rd and 11th avenues S., SE.

Officials said there is no indication the incident was terror related.

A picture of the suspect on the TMZ website appears to show him in a rage in the moments after the vehicle is stopped. The New York Police Department says the driver drove along the sidewalk for at least three blocks, hitting pedestrians as he went.

Police said the driver of a Honda drove at a high rate of speed the wrong way up the sidewalk along Seventh Avenue, plowing into pedestrians before crashing and coming to a stop.

He had been dishonourably discharged, and arrested twice for driving while intoxicated.

Thursday's mayhem began at noon on a hot, clear day that brought large crowds of people into the streets to enjoy the good weather. He wasn't immediately available to comment.

He has a criminal record, said Mr de Blasio. At first, I thought someone was intentionally doing it.

The White House said President Donald Trump was informed of the situation in Times Square and would continue to be briefed as it unfolded. An attempted car-bomb attack in Times Square in 2010 remains a potent memory for many, and recent terrorist attacks overseas have shown the damage that vehicles can do when used as weapons.
