Sweden drops case, but WikiLeaks' Assange not in the clear

Since 2012, the WikiLeaks founder had sought asylum in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, avoiding extradition to Sweden to face allegations of sexual assault and rape stemming from a 2010 incident.

Assange said his lawyers had contacted British authorities in the hope of starting a "dialogue" over his future, after United Kingdom police said they would be "obliged" to execute an arrest warrant against him if he left the embassy. Speaking from the balcony of the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Assange said he could not forgive the awful injustice he had suffered.

The Swedish prosecutor announced Friday that the investigation into WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for suspected rape has been discontinued. "UK refuses to confirm or deny whether it has already received a USA extradition warrant for Julian Assange".

Sweden's top prosecutor says she is dropping an investigation into a rape claim against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after nearly seven years. A.

WikiLeaks says the ball is now in Britain's court after Sweden's decision to drop its rape investigation of Julian Assange. Top prosecutor Marianne Ny said that the investigations and the arrest warrant are being dropped since it has become impossible to serve a legal notice to Assange. "He gave a very good explanation to what happened between him and the woman and that explanation [fit like] a glove to all the circumstances in the case".

He said Friday that he will not forgive and forget the seven-year detention without charge and the five years in the embassy without sunlight.

So, Sweden - whose officials questioned Assange in 2016 at the Ecuadorian embassy - has simply made a decision to stop investing resources in Assange, although Ny believes there's still probable cause in the rape case.

The drop of the investigation comes two days after Chelsea Manning was released from military prison in Kansas after serving seven years of a 35-year sentence for leaking thousands of documents including battlefield reports on Iraq and Afghanistan and State Department cables to WikiLeaks.

In a court document seen by Reuters, Ny said there were no further avenues to pursue to take the investigation forward. "The MPS will provide a level of resourcing which is proportionate to that offence", it said. "Samuelson cited a comment by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions that the arrest would be a priority".

"The European Arrest Warrant no longer holds".

After a 7-year stand-off with Sweden, Assange may still not be able to leave the Ecuadorean embassy.

British Prime Miinister Theresa May told reporters that the police - not the government - will decide Assange's fate.
