Senators still underdogs against Penguins despite Game 1 win

The Senators opened the Eastern Conference final according to coach Guy Boucher's plan by frustrating the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins - including holding them to 0-for-5 on the power play - as Bobby Ryan scored the victor to give Ottawa 2-1 overtime victory at the PPG Paints Arena.

After Pittsburgh scored with just over five minutes to play in regulation of Game 1 on Saturday, Ottawa winger Bobby Ryan ended it with a nifty goal just minutes into the overtime period.

The Senators improved to 6-1 in overtime in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including 3-0 on the road.

"You just want to redeem yourself", a relieved Ryan said. "I got fortunate that it found the back of the net". With Malkin on the ice against Ceci, the Penguins had a 5-4 advantage in shot attempts but a 3-0 deficit in shots on goal.

A marked departure from Game 1, as Pittsburgh struggled to generate any sort of extended pressure in a 2-1 overtime loss. "There's a lot of things we have to be aware of". Coach Mike Sullivan also stressed the need to shoot more rather than looking for a ideal setup. We just really keep the same approach. We have to give props, however, to the Senators and their defensive scheme. Whether we score a goal or we get scored on, that's what we've acquired over time. We know that. Its a whole new game every time you step on the ice.”. Anderson stopped 27 of 28 shots in game 1. The Ottawa power play, coming into this match running at a 0-16 pace over the past five games, was awful right up until Mark Stone had a point-blank chance, but he could not put the puck past the quick pad of Marc-André Fleury.

Schultz, who has become Pittsburgh's most important blue liner with Kris Letang and Trevor Daley out, slid awkwardly into the end boards after getting bumped off the puck by Senators forward Mike Hoffman about midway through the first.

That didn't sit well with the Senators or their faithful. No, the Senators can't tempt this kind of fate very often but Anderson made a huge glove stop on a deflection by Patric Hornqvist on the fifth power play of the night. The top three lines had no life most of the night and the power play went a putrid 0-for-5.

Sometimes it seems like everything the Ottawa Senators do, they do backwards.

Ryan has scored two of the overtime goals, with Dion Phaneuf, Clarke MacArthur, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Kyle Turris netting the others. Inexplicably, Dumoulin put the puck on Ryan's stick behind the Penguins net and Ryan made him pay, making a brilliant behind-the-back pass to Pageau in the slot. The Senators went almost 19 minutes without putting a shot on Fleury.

Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby (87) controls the puck as Ottawa Senators' Erik Karlsson (65) defends during the second period of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final in the NHL hockey Stanley Cup playoffs, Monday, May 15, 2017, in Pittsburgh. "They're there. We hit at least three posts and there's some good looks there". "Obviously, our best penalty killer was [Anderson]".

He had gotten help earlier when Ron Hainsey's shot from the point was tipped by Jake Guentzel off the crossbar. Before, we talked, ‘Hey theres going to be a little pushback, but it always stays a little fictional because you havent lived it.

"I don't think you're going to pull them away from there", Crosby said of the Senators' penchant for collapsing around their net.

"We gave ourselves enough (scoring chances) to create some offence and we tried to limit them, but the reality is you're not going to limit those guys to nothing".
