Qatar 2022 World Cup will attract 1.3 million fans

Jadgesh Kumar, 54, was a carpenter working at Doha's Khalifa International Stadium that is part of a sporting complex for the football tournament.

The scene of many of Qatar's greatest sporting moments, including its 1992 Gulf Cup victory, the stadium is also scheduled to host the 2019 World Athletics Championships.

"We are pleased to announce that Khalifa International Stadium will host the final of the 2017 Emir Cup between Al Rayyan and Al Sadd on Friday evening", said Qatar FA President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani.

"Qatar's World Cup organisers have placed special requirements on contractors that are supposed to stop this happening, but the reality is that workers on their sites still live under Qatar's repressive sponsorship system, which gives employers powerful tools to abuse them".

He is at least the fourth World Cup employee to have died of cardiac arrest in the past year and a half, the newswire states. While Human Rights groups have claimed that mishaps to labourers have occurred here in the past, the tournament's organisers alleged that this was not a effect of his working conditions.

Speaking about the exploitation of migrant labor, Deputy Director of Amnesty International's Global Issues Programme James Lynch said, "It's a year since Amnesty International exposed the exploitation of migrant workers who helped to build the Khalifa Stadium, but abuses on Qatar 2022 sites have continued".

"We are deeply saddened that one of our workers recently passed away while off-duty". While the statement offers condolence and words of sympathy to the family of the deceased, the Committee has refuted any possible connection between the working conditions of the employees and their subsequent deaths.

Qatar's World Cup stadium was scheduled to hold its first football match on Friday - as migrant workers working on its construction continue to face abuse.

Qatar's government has denied claims there are higher instances of heart attacks among construction workers and does not publish independently verified statistics on worker-related injuries and fatalities.

So far, two people have died while working on stadium sites, including a British man who fell to his death at Khalifa Stadium.

"Workers dying suddenly from heart attacks is something we hear about often, the causes are not always clear".

Past year too, Amnesty International had exposed the systemic abuse of migrant labor deployed for the renovation of Khalifa International Stadium. "People's lives are in danger".

In a March 2016 report called "The Ugly Side of the Beautiful Game: Exploitation of Migrant Workers on a Qatar 2022 site", Amnesty highlighted how migrant workers were exploited at the Khalifa Stadium.
