The visit will commence with a visit to the Seema Malaka at the Gangaramayya temple in Colombo.

During his two-day visit, PM Modi will participate in the International Vesak Day celebrations, inaugurate a hospital built with Indian assistance and address the Indian-origin Tamil community, besides attending some other programmes.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi departs today to attend the International Vesak Day celebrations in Sri Lanka as the chief guest, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has requested him to talk on fisherman issue during his visit, ANI News reported.

The Prime Minister stated that during his visit, he will interact with leading Buddhist spiritual leaders, scholars and theologians.

"Sri Lanka takes pride in being among the most important nerve centres of Buddhist teachings and learning", he said.

That will include removing mines and other explosive as well as ensuring more permanent intelligence sharing and law enforcement. It is also unclear whether ISIS and other terrorists would comply with so-called safe zones in Syria.

After paying homage at Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Indian Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with the President at the President's House in Kandy where the President will host a luncheon in honour of the visiting Premier. He will also be unveiling a plaque commemorating the foundation laying of the faculty of the Kandyan dance, which is being constructed with India's grant assistance.

Later, he will travel to Hatton to inaugurate the new Indian-funded building-complex of the Dickoya Base Hospital.

Apart from these activities, India is also participating in the International Buddhist film festival and other activities.

"I believe we are at a moment of great opportunity in our ties with Sri Lanka", he added. However, he will be interacting with Sri Lankan leaders on the sidelines of the Vesak Day celebrations. "This will be my second bilateral visit there in two years, a sign of our strong relationship", PM Modi said in a Facebook post.

The Spokesperson said both countries are working together to strengthen and diversify the relationship between them. Sri Lanka is hosting the event for the first time. "Nothing is specifically earmarked for discussion during the current visit", he said.
