Phone scam claiming to provide WannaCry ransomware supports

Sean Pike, program VP in the security products group at IDC, a tech industry research provider, pointed that everyone has been a bit numb to attacks because it is something they hear so much about now and Microsoft benefits from that.

Called WannaCry or WannaCrypt, the virus has already hit 48 NHS hospitals across Britain.

The WannaCry attack took over computer systems, caused them to freeze, and displayed the message, "Oops, your files have been encrypted!"

On March 14 this year, Microsoft released a security update which addressed the vulnerability in the 16-year-old Windows XP operating system that the hackers behind the massive ransomware attack exploited and created havoc in 150 countries.

He said the motivation remained unknown but ransomware attacks were normally "criminally minded". - How much ransom was asked? Major companies that includes sixteen National Health Service organsisations in the U.K.

The flaw in Windows behind a huge cyber-attack affecting organisations around the world, including some United Kingdom hospitals, can be traced back to the US National Security Agency (NSA) - raising questions over the US government's decision to keep such flaws a secret. "And this most recent attack represents a completely unintended but disconcerting link between the two most serious forms of cybersecurity threats in the world today - nation-state action and organized criminal action".

The exploitation of EternalBlue, suspected to have been developed using a hacking method leaked from US National Security Agency, allows the malware to spread through file-sharing protocols set up across the internal networks of organisations, many of which criss-cross the globe, according to Financial Times. So IT managers were caught off guard.

Trustlook, a next-generation cybersecurity company, has released a free scanner and vaccine toolkit to help protect Windows computers that are either vulnerable to, or have been infected with, the risky strain of ransomware known as WannaCry. It is best to take precautionary steps like taking regular back-ups on a hard drive and keeping the software and operating system up-to-date. India didn't feel the real impact as the other countries yet. On May 12, some NHS services had to turn away non-critical emergencies and some ambulances were diverted. There are almost 150 million computers running Windows XP operation system globally. Organizations such as Renault or the NHS were struck and crippled by the attack. Nissan Motor Manufacturing U.K.in Tyne and Wear, England, halted production after the ransomware infected some of their systems.

However, Bossert warned that following the patching advice from Microsoft and the Federal Bureau of Investigation should be a top priority to stop the spread of ransomware, which has hit a number of large-profile companies, including FedEx. The Turkish site was among those. Some of the victims have reportedly regained access to their files after paying, although security experts advise against complying with ransom demands.
