Pentagon: IS in Afghanistan leader killed in April raid

The second leader of the jihadist group to be killed by U.S. and Afghan forces in less than nine months, his death came days after Washington dropped its largest non-nuclear bomb on ISIS hideouts in the same area.

At least 36 Daesh or so called Islamic State (IS) militants have been killed in separate incidents in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Sunday.

Abdul Hasib, the head of the Islamic state who was killed on April 27 was declared dead by Afghan officials on Sunday.

The US troops in Afghanistan also confirmed the death of the insurgent leader and added that several high-ranking commanders of the group and 35 other members were also killed in the operation.

The April 26 raid that killed Hasib resulted in the deaths of two Army Rangers, and the USA military is investigating whether they were killed by friendly fire.

"The Afghan government is committed to continuing its operations against [ISIS] and other terrorist groups until they are annihilated", the statement concluded.

An Afghan Army helicopter hovers over the Kabul Military Hospital during a March 8 attack by suspected militants led by Sheikh Abdul Hasib.

Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said at the time that Hasib was believed to have been killed.

Abdul Hasib directed the March 8 attack against Kabul National Military Hospital, which resulted in the deaths and injury of over one-hundred innocent Afghans.

Defeating the group remains one of the top United States priorities in Afghanistan and last month, the U.S. dropped its largest non-nuclear bomb on the extremist group's hideouts in eastern Afghanistan, triggering global shock waves.

Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan General John Nicholson praised the successful joint operation as another important step in the relentless campaign to defeat IS in the country in 2017.

USA troops in Afghanistan number about 8,400 today, and there are another 5,000 from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, who also serve in an advisory capacity.

A US-Afghan army statement issued following the operation said troops had been involved in an "intense" three-hour firefight.
