Notre Dame Graduates Protest Pence's Commencement Speech

As the keynote speaker for commencement ceremonies, Pence was greeted with loud applause when he took the podium. The walk-out came before the students received their degrees, and they were not allowed back in, officials said.

As several dozen students in caps and gowns quietly exited the graduation ceremony, the vice president praised Notre Dame, one of the nation's most prominent Catholic universities, as "a vanguard of freedom of expression and the free exchange of ideas". Pence was planning to seek reelection as governor when Trump selected him to be his vice presidential running mate in the summer of 2016, but Pence was unpopular at the time in his own state and many thought he would lose his reelection bid. But after thousands of students signed a petition asking the university not invite President Donald Trump, the university invited Pence instead.

GLAAD also pointed out that Pence opposes marriage equality and voted against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a federal employment bill that sought to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In a request for comment on the walkout, the university didn't have much to say, but did remark on the weather.

Pence was also protested Saturday during a commencement address at Grove City (PA) College.

Vice President Mike Pence delivered the commencement address at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

High air pollution may disrupt your sleep
Researchers found that the sleep efficiency of the lowest 25 percent of participants was 88 percent or less. However, the high level of pollution was associated with a longer waking while waking up during sleep.

The activist group We Stand For, which planned the walk-out, suggested Pence's policies as vice president and while IN governor harmed minorities and discriminated against people for their sexual orientation, skin colors and religion.

Liz Hynes said that Pence represented the kind of intolerance Notre Dame had sought to eliminate.

The vice president decried "safe zones" and "speech codes" as "destructive of learning and the pursuit of knowledge, and they are wholly outside the American tradition". And the reason the students decided that is because Pence is conservative and they're not. "This should not and must not be met with silence".

Meanwhile, Pence began his speech unfazed by the student protesters. In 2009, former President Barack Obama's commencement address at the university sparked protests by antiabortion advocates, who marched outside the university's gates.

Brian Ricketts, one of the group's leaders and the Notre Dame student body's president, told IndyStar that many students were "upset and hurt" by the decision to invite Mr Pence because his "policies have impacted the humanity of certain graduates".
