North Korea says linking cyber attack to Pyongyang is 'ridiculous'

North Korea wants the Trump administration to soften its "hostile policy" against the nuclear armed nation before peace talks can begin, the country's envoy to the United Nations said Friday.

"As everybody knows, the Americans have gestured [toward] dialogue", Deputy UN Ambassador Kim In Ryong told reporters Friday, as cited by Reuters.

North Korea has said it carried out a successful test of a new ballistic missile on May 14.

North Korea is also known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Kim said the launch showed the "highly developed stage of science and technology in the field of national defence attained by the DPRK" which he said is "of great and special significance" in ensuring peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the region. He said North Korea would never abandon its "nuclear deterrence for self-defense and pre-emptive strike capability" even if the US ratchets up sanctions and pressure "to the utmost".

Before an emergency meeting of the council Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley declared: "You either support North Korea or you don't, but you have to choose".

Iran state TV declares Rouhani wins vote for second term
Rouhani was a key architect of the 2015 nuclear deal with the United States , the European Union and other partners. Analysts have suggested that a high voter turnout will help Rouhani win a second four-year term.

North Korea's foreign ministry said that the U.S.is driving a scheme to put sanctions and pressure on North Korea, raising tensions on the divided peninsula.

Kim accused the council of playing "to the tune of the USA again" and protested the Trump administration's demand for countries to choose allegiance between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, his country's official name.

New South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who took office last week, campaigned on a more moderate approach toward the North but he has said it must change its attitude of insisting on arms development before dialogue can be possible. The U.N. Security Council first imposed sanctions on North Korea in 2006 and has strengthened the measures in response to the country's five nuclear tests and two long-range rocket launches.

"The thought of placing cyanide in the hands of the North Koreans, considering their record on human rights, political prisoners, and assassinations is not only unsafe but defies common sense", Haley said in a statement.

United Nations sanctions monitors said they are investigating the case for any violations. She urged other countries to sever ties with Pyongyang.
