"Nicky Hayden's clinical condition remains extremely critical", said a statement from the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena.

The American, who has been racing for Red Bull Honda's World Superbike team, collided with a vehicle near Rimini Wednesday.

Doctors in Italy have confirmed former Moto GP world champion Nicky Hayden has suffered serious brain damage following a cycling accident. Further description of the extent of his injuries has not been released since the hospital's prior statement of "serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage".

Hayden was struck by a vehicle while training on a bicycle in the Rimini region, requiring medical attention at the scene before being transferred to hospital.

Italian media quoted the hospital as saying Hayden had suffered a cerebral edema and lower body fractures and surgery had not been possible immediately because of his condition.

Any move for the 27-year-old would mirror Manchester United's current move to re-sign central defender Michael Keane from Burnley for £25m even though they let him go for £2m two years ago.

Hayden now has his fiancé Jackie by his side as well as his brother Tommy and mother Rose, according to a report on Fox Sports MotoGP.

Italian great Valentino Rossi, hailed his former team mate as "one of the best friends I have had in the paddock".

"Come on Nicky, we're all with you", he said.

Hayden, nicknamed the "Kentucky Kid", won the 2006 MotoGP world title before moving to the Superbike World Championship for the 2016 season.

He won three races in a career from 2003-2015, before switching to Superbike full-time, although he made two starts in MotoGP past year to fill in for injured Honda rider Jack Miller.

"The most attractive thing I have about him is when he gave his hand to me after the unlucky race of Valencia 2015, on the lap of honour".
