Nicki Minaj kicks off Billboard Awards; Drake early victor

Drake was named Top Artist at the Billboard Music Awards show in Las Vegas Sunday.

From a performance perspective, Nicki gave her credits lots of ammunition as she seemed more focused on surrounding herself with back-up dancers and decorating herself in S&M-inspired high-end fashions.

"For the first time with trousers on in years!" her sister Noah Cyrus said as she introduced Miley, who came out in jean-shorts.

Celebrity presenters and performers brought out vibrant styles on the red carpet Sunday night at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards. And the Billboard Music Awards viewers were surprised, yet respectful of her decision.

Drake had a big night, what with setting the record for the most Billboard Music awards ever won by an artist in a single year. The Canadian rap artist won a total of 13 awards, including Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Billboard 200 Artist and Top Hot 100 Artist.

Most of the categories were decided by song sales over the past year, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social media interactions as tracked by Billboard. Even Drake noticed her, saying she looked "incredible".

Drake walked into the Billboard Awards with 10 awards, while early winners included Beyonce, who won five, and twenty one pilots, who won four.

Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons said in the tribute that Cornell, who also sang lead in the band Audioslave, was a singer who had "a voice for the ages".

Winged Goddess: A chandelier rose from the floor and revealed the Grammy victor Celine Dion, who basically had wings on. Once known for her shocking performances of twerking and dangling naked from a wrecking ball, the singer performed the slow-burning love song "Malibu", without much of her signature in-your-face sexiness. Both Drake and The Chainsmokers were set to perform at the ceremony, along with Sam Hunt, Florida Georgia Line, John Legend, Halsey, Camila Cabello and Julia Michaels.

At the show, Diddy honored his former friend and artist Notorious B.I.G, who would have turned 45 on Sunday. Diddy also introduced CJ Wallace, B.I.G's son, who spoke about his father's legacy.

Following the performance, Gwen Stefani took to the stage to present Cher with the prestigious award, calling the singer "truly the definition of an icon".
