NHS cyber attack: A&Es 'fully open' again

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Mr Wallace said that IT staff had worked around the clock over the weekend to patch security systems and restore files at NHS trusts across the country.

"We were still able to see all our patients as usual on the Friday".

The cyberattacks started Friday and spread rapidly around the globe using a security flaw in Microsoft's Windows XP operating system, an older version that is no longer given mainstream tech support by the United States giant.

A computer virus known as WannaCry or WannaCrypt has so far spread more than 150 countries, including Turkey, but showed signs of slowing down on Monday.

Security minister Ben Wallace said that the NHS had followed "pretty good procedures" in dealing with the attack.

A divert remains in place for trauma, stroke and urgent heart attack treatment, where diagnostic services are required, at the Lister Hospital, part of East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust (Midlands & East).

"Over the last 18 months, we have reduced the proportion of devices in the NHS that use the most vulnerable platform - XP - from 20% to less than 5%", he said, but he admitted "lessons would be learned".

Antonio Conte is everyone's favourite manager after his classy Middlesbrough gesture
The Blues have a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League after defeating Middlesbrough 3-0 on Monday. "We're very close. We need to take three points to win the title. "We're preoccupied chasing two trophies, nothing else really matters besides that.

Liz Capp-Gray, acting director of health informatics at Medway Foundation Trust, said: "I can confirm that we have not, so far, been directly targeted by the WannaCry ransomware attack". Microsoft released a security update in March to protect against WannaCrypt but Windows XP was excluded from the patch.

"In addition to protective real-time monitoring of national NHS IT services and systems, which were unaffected by this issue, we are supporting NHS organisations by undertaking cyber security testing and providing bespoke advice and action points".

Experts say the attackers might get more than $1 billion from the scam, although as of Saturday, only $33,000 was deposited into several Bitcoin accounts associated with the ransomware.

The Welsh Government said precautionary measures had been taken "to ensure the integrity of the system and we continue to monitor the situation closely".

A number of variants were spotted by different cyber security researchers.

"It is important to note that the vast majority of NHS organisations report that they are running contemporary IT systems, which are commissioned depending on local need", the NHS said in a statement. We are obviously working with that business the Australian Cyber Security Centre is engaging with them'.

A spokesperson said: "Our IT teams were in over the weekend making sure our systems were robust enough to protect against a possible infection, and our firewall was up to date to prevent such a problem".
