News guide for Trump-Russia probe focusing on ousted Flynn

The president made a decision.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn said her actions with regard to the executive order were "enormously disappointing" and accused her of undermining the powers of the President because she disagreed with Trump's order "as a policy matter".

Flynn quit after after news reports revealed that Yates had warned McGahn in late January that Flynn had misled White House officials about details of his conversations with the Kremlin's U.S. ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

White House officials had insisted that Flynn had not discussed US -imposed sanctions with Kislyak during the presidential transition period, but asked Flynn to resign after news reports indicated he had misled them about the nature of the calls.

However, it took 18 days from the second meeting - and only after the news was leaked and published by the Washington Post - for the White House to fire Flynn.

"We felt like it was critical that we get this information to the White House, in part because the vice president was unknowingly making false statements to the public and because we believed that Gen. Flynn was compromised with respect to the Russians", Yates said. "And that created a compromise situation, a situation where the national security adviser essentially could be blackmailed by the Russians".

"They are attuned, it seems, more to defending the president than to taking care of national security business in an appropriate way", Whitehouse, the ranking member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism, said in an interview with CNN.

Yates' questioning by a Senate panel investigating Russian interference in the presidential election was just one portion of a politically charged day that began with combative tweets from Trump and continued with disclosures from Obama administration officials about a private Oval Office conversation between Obama and his successor. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she still has "questions regarding Russia's relationships and connections with Trump advisers and associates".

In her testimony, Yates said that she had called McGahn the Monday after they met to tell him the material was ready to review.

Yates testified about two events -on January 26 and 27- where she came to the White House to speak with its counsel Don McGahn.

"I told them again that there were a number of press accounts of statements that had been made by the vice president and other high-ranking White House officials about General Flynn's conduct that we knew to be untrue", Yates said. She said she did not know what happened after that, because Trump fired her that day, January 30, after she said his executive order banning Muslim immigrants was unlawful and instructed Justice employees not to implement it.

Instead, Trump chose to play up former director of national intelligence James Clapper's acknowledgement during the same hearing that he was not aware of any evidence of collusion between the president and Russian Federation, which American intelligence has concluded tried to sway the USA election in Trump's favor.
