The sanctions came shortly after US President Donald Trump called the situation in Venezuela a "disgrace to humanity".

The officials say the list of blacklisted officials is likely to include members of Venezuela's Supreme Court, which issued a controversial late March ruling stripping congress of its last powers.

"Members of the country's Supreme Court of Justice have exacerbated the situation by consistently interfering with the legislative branch's authority", U.S Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

The new sanctions package was aimed at stepping up pressure on supporters of President Nicolas Maduro amid growing worldwide concern over a crackdown on mass street protests.

In February, the United States designated Maduro's Vice-President, Tareck El Aissami, as a major global drug trafficker. Maduro's opposition was planning a larger Saturday protest nationwide to demand elections.

The United States warned at the United Nations that Venezuela's crisis was worsening and could escalate into a civil conflict like that of Syria.

Indicating an awareness that their regime change efforts are not well-received among the mass of the people, the 2008 budget wrote, "Democracy in Latin America, as it has been promoted by the developed countries, is being increasingly defined by populist voices as exploitative and imperialist".

"We can not lose any opportunity to help mediate" in Venezuela's current crisis, Jungmann said.
