Marcus: Why didn't Trump want anyone to hear his conversation with Comey?

According to multiple news sources, one of those memos documents a conversation in which President Trump urged Comey to close the bureau's investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

July 7, 2016: Comey vigorously defends the decision not to prosecute Clinton over her use of a private email server as secretary of state. "Using language like, 'can you give the guy a break?' might work in business but it doesn't work in the White House and it doesn't work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation director", she said. Lawmakers from both political parties said they want to hear Comey testify in public, an idea that Comey associates have said he favors.

November 12, 2016: During a telephone call with top campaign donors, Clinton blames Comey for her defeat by Trump.

Our request, submitted to the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, comes after The New York Times broke the story that Comey had memorialized his meetings with Trump, including one that took place in February, the day after Flynn was forced to resign amidst revelations he had lied about conversations he had with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

Striking a defiant stance, he added: "You can't let the critics and the naysayers get in the way of your dreams". And even if it did, they said, Comey would come out for the better.

January 22, 2017: Two days after taking office, Trump appears to single out Comey at a White House reception to thank law enforcement officers and others that helped during the inauguration.

March 20, 2017: Comey testifies at the same hearing that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department have no information to substantiate Trump's unsubstantiated claim on Twitter that former President Barack Obama wiretapped him before the election.

May 2, 2017: Clinton again lays part of the blame for losing the election on Comey's October 28 letter.

Then an American official raised the idea of the Saudis' buying a sophisticated radar system created to shoot down ballistic missiles.

The committee made the requests Wednesday in two separate letters, one to Comey and one to McCabe. But he told senators: "I can't consider for a second whose political futures will be affected and in what way".

May 15-16, 2017: The White House defends Trump's disclosure of classified information to senior Russian officials as "wholly appropriate".

Michael Flynn was sacked as national security adviser in February after it emerged that he misled the vice-president about meetings with the Russian ambassador during the election campaign.

Trump said on May 16 that he had "an absolute right" as president to share "facts pertaining to terrorism" with Russian Federation.

"If the memo exists, I need to see it and I need to see it right away".

As for Comey, whom Trump fired last week, the FBI director wrote in a memo after a February meeting at the White House that the new president had asked him to shut down the FBI's investigation of Flynn and his Russian contacts, said a person who had read the memo. "It would be helpful to have less drama emanating from the White House", he said.

Representative Jason Chaffetz, Republican chairman of the House oversight committee, sent a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday requesting that it turn over all documents and recordings that detail communications between Comey and Trump.
