Man tried to break into cockpit of American Airlines plane

Allison Forburger, who lives in Hawaii, where she works for the Navy, said the man was moving toward the first-class section of the cabin with a blanket over his head when a flight attendant directed him to stop.

"Due to a disturbance during the flight, the crew requested that law enforcement meet the aircraft upon landing in Honolulu", American Airlines said in a statement.

Mark and Donna Basden were among the first to board the plane Friday and found a laptop in the seat pocket of Mark Basden.

About halfway through the flight, the passenger, identified as 25-year-old Anil Uskanil, was headed towards the front of the plane. The Albuquerque, New Mexico, couple assumed it was from the previous flight.

"At this time, there are no other reports of disruptions to flights", the department tweeted.

"The flight attendants just were really heroic", Lorenzen said.

Officials said the suspect had been drinking but did not appear drunk enough to meet the criteria for public intoxication under the law.

HONOLULU (CBSDFW.COM/AP) -An American Airlines crew and off-duty Honolulu police officer subdued a Turkish man Friday on board a Honolulu-bound flight after he tried to break into the cockpit. The plane involved was cleared of passengers and was being checked by an explosive operations detection unit, the newspaper said.

Pedregon referred further questions to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but a source told CNS Uskanil was the same man who caused the disturbance on the Honolulu-bound flight.

Uskanil was subdued for the rest of the flight and arrested in Honolulu when the plane landed with a military escort.

Mark Basden handed the man the laptop, telling him it had been in his seat. At that point, passengers came up from behind and grabbed him. He was ultimately secured there with duct tape.

Uskanil having a laptop with him may have caused more concern than usual, with US and European officials in recent weeks exchanging threats about aviation believed to include bombs hidden in laptop computers. "We continue to monitor all flights out of an abundance of caution and will provide updates as necessary", according to the statement.

The incident prompted U.S. Pacific Command to scramble two F-22 Raptors from the Hawaii Air National Guard, which escorted the flight from Los Angeles into Honolulu International Airport about 11:35 a.m.

Earlier, the man, who purchased his ticket around midnight, had an encounter with airport personnel at the airport in Los Angeles, an official briefed on the incident told CNN.
