Macron wins French presidency but hurdles remain in campaign to govern

While Mr. Macron won a decisive victory over Le Pen, it is important to note that Madame Le Pen received 34 percent of the votes or the support of nearly 11 million people and everybody who supported her or did not, knew that her top agenda was to leave the European Union. Macron's liberal project "belongs to the past". To have a man who has never held an elected office before, win on a national scale, with a one-year-old party certainly sets a new record for France.

The two most optimistic possibilities for Macron is that En Marche! either secures a working majority in June or forms the biggest group of legislators but not an absolute majority.

Macron doesn't come from a major political party.

European assets had rallied last week as opinion polls continued to point to a Macron win. The National Front would be able to grab 15-25 seats, the Socialist left 28-43, while the conservatives would go on to win about 200-210 seats. This was the 2016 US presidential election all over again, but fortunately, on Sunday, French voters elected the level-headed Macron. Such talk is premature, though, for whilst Macron may have won the battle against the far-right, the war has only just begun. Given the volatile mood of the French electorate, this could see in the second half of 2017 and beyond rising support for not just Le Pen but also the left.

Both Melenchon and Le Pen oppose the Euro single currency and are sceptical of the European Union.

"The next challenge for Macron is going to be the parliamentary elections in June, and given that there's a lack of significant support, it remains highly uncertain whether the President can build a parliamentary majority". However, even though Frexit seemed like a possible idea, it highly seemed unlikely, since it would require a constitutional change.

Unknown to voters before his turbulent 2014-16 tenure as France's pro-business economy minister, Macron took a giant gamble by quitting Socialist President Francois Hollande's government to run as an independent.

In his victory speech, Macron vowed to "rebuild the relationship between Europe and the peoples that make it".

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent Macron a telegram to congratulate him and told him Russia was ready for constructive work on bilateral and global issues, the Kremlin said on Monday.

"As of today, he (Valls) does not fit the criteria that would allow the investiture committee to take him on, so., (until he joins) the national investiture committee that I preside over can not consider the candidature of Mr. Valls", Jean-Paul Delevoye, who chooses Macron's party's candidates, told Europe 1 radio on Wednesday. He pledged to open a new page for France based on hope and "restored confidence".

Still, Macron's defeat of the National Front's Marine Le Pen means the European Union will be a more stable negotiating partner for the British to engage with and he has spoken of the importance of maintaining France's "special relationship" with the United Kingdom.
