James Comey Literally Tried to Hide Behind a Curtain to Avoid Trump

With a special counsel, Congress loses authority in its role in the investigation.

Then again there has never been a president quite like Donald Trump.

Mr Trump responded by once again denying any links to Moscow, but a new Reuters report quoting current and former USA officials said Mr Michael Flynn and other advisers to Mr Trump's campaign were in contact with Russian officials on at least 18 occasions during the last seven months of the presidential race.

Rosenstein fielded questions in the closed session for more than an hour, but many senators left the briefing unsatisfied.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said at a press conference: "We need the facts".

"This is the single greatest witch-hunt of a politician in American history!" he said on his Twitter account. Durbin said Rosenstein told senators he wrote the letter giving justification for Comey's firing knowing the plans were already in the works.

Graham's remarks came after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to the Russian investigation.

Rosenstein on Wednesday announced the appointment of former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russia's alleged interference in last year's USA election, and possible collusion with Trump's campaign to tilt the vote in the billionaire businessman's favor.

"I'm pretty confident he is", he said Thursday on CNN.

At the start of another roller-coaster week in Washington, Trump was accused of divulging highly sensitive classified information gleaned by Israeli spies to visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

German foreign minister says concerned about NAFTA renegotiation
The administration will need to rally lawmakers behind its negotiating position, a hard task in a polarized political environment. Nonpartisan congressional research concluded in 2015 that NAFTA had not caused an exodus of jobs, nor was it a major job creator.

While Rosenstein didn't ask senators to stand down - one member said he was "unequivocal" that the Senate Intelligence Committee should continue its probe - some members are bracing for at least a temporary slowdown while Mueller determines the breadth of his probe.

Comey's ouster came amid the FBI's probe of Russian intrusions in the 2016 race, including possible ties between Russia and Trump's campaign.

A self-described friend of Comey's wrote in a public blog post on Thursday that Comey had told him that he had rebuffed a Trump request for loyalty by promising only honesty. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, said of Rosenstein after the hearing.

But Trump later contradicted that explanation, saying he'd made up his mind to fire Comey well before Rosenstein's recommendation arrived on his desk. "I hope you can let this go", Trump said, according to multiple Comey associates.

Moments before Mr Trump weighed in on Twitter, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin welcomed the special counsel investigation and said it was important to get facts in the Russian Federation probe.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that Trump called Comey weeks after he took office on January 20 and asked him when federal authorities were going to say Trump was not under investigation.

"I believe it hurts our country terribly, because it shows we're a divided, mixed-up, not-unified country". It cited two people briefed on the call.

Congressional committees are eager for Comey's testimony following Trump's unsuspected firing of him last week.

In an atypical move for a sitting president, Trump publicly criticized a law enforcement matter decided by his own Justice Department, to appoint and independent investigator to take over the probe.

Calls for a special investigation mounted after Mr Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last week.
