France's Macron says Le Pen promoting hate, would weaken economy

Following Macron's win on Sunday - and the second place finish by far-right National Front candidate Marine Le Pen - numerous defeated presidential contenders threw their voice behind the centrist front-runner ahead of the May 7 run-off.

Abandoning the National Front is likely a desperate attempt by Le Pen to break with the party's extremist past, which stands between her and anti-globalist French voters who aren't xenophobic.

Each minister must be "totally mobilized in this campaign", Le Foll said, adding that in 2002 Marine Le Pen's father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, also made it into the second round and was defeated.

Politicians on the moderate left and right, including the Socialist and Republicans party losers in Sunday's first-round vote, manoeuvred to block Ms Le Pen's path to power in the May 7 run-off.

Final results from the election's first round show that Macron got almost 1 million more votes than Le Pen, with both advancing to the May 7 runoff.

Mr Macron is seen beating Ms Le Pen by 61 per cent to 39 per cent in the run-off vote, according to pollster Opinionway yesterday.

The rebranding speaks to an eerie convergence of the far-right and far-left in a country that has booted its mainstream parties from the presidential race for the first time in modern history.

Tillerson, Lavrov to meet in Washington on Syria and Ukraine
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says the U.S. will closely examine Russia's plan to establish "de-escalation" zones in Syria. Lavrov and Tillerson will meet in Washington, DC on Wednesday, May 10, to discuss Syria and Ukraine, among other issues.

The French presidential election could be greatly impacted by the immigration.

The anti-EU presidential candidate could be summoned to parliament as early as next week to be questioned.

Following the result Le Pen said "the survival of France is at stake" and slammed Macron for being "weak" on terror in what will remain one of her core messages. The move comes just a day after she reached the second round of the French Presidential elections, where she will face centrist Emmanuel Macron on May 7.

But she is seeking all the same to distance herself from the toxic legacy of her father and the xenophobic and anti-semitic undertones of his previous campaigns. Macron received his 24 percent share of the vote and Le Pen took home 21.5 percent, which is consistent with the National Front's performance since 2012, although six points lower than the party's score in the regional elections in 2015. "Francois Hollande is going to speak against Le Pen and certainly call for voting for Macron", Stephane Le Foll was quoted as saying by the CNews channel.

"That was disdainful towards the French people", Phillipot said.

Whoever wins in the May 7 second-round election, one thing is clear: the French public is exhausted of the political establishment.
