Firefighters advance on blaze southeast of San Diego

Five airtankers and three helicopters were making drops on fire at one point, said Cal Fire Capt. Isaac Sanchez, according to the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper. Residents there were put on notice about the possible need to evacuate their homes.

Arson investigators began a criminal investigation into the origin of the fire with their focus trending toward a video posted to Instagram.

According to the video's description, Carvalho wrote that he and his friend were shooting on Bureau of Land Management property when a group of people near them started the fire.

Cal Fire said the fire, which erupted Saturday morning just south of state Route 94 near Otay Lakes Road, has burned 2,056 acres and is 75 percent contained as of Monday morning. The fire is primarily burning in grass with some sparse brush.

First reported shortly before noon, the Gate Fire had a "dangerous rate of spread" in a remote area near the community of Jamul, Cal Fire reported via Twitter.

The California Highway Patrol then closed SR 94 in both directions from Honey Springs Road to state Route 188.

Santee Fire Captain Richard Medlin, right, and other firefighters watch a brushfire burn next to Otay Lakes Road near Highway 94 in Jamul, Calif., on Saturday, May 20, 2017. Most of those affected were evacuated to Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista. Hot, dry and windy conditions and rugged terrain helped the fire grow to 300 acres by 1 p.m. Saturday growing to 425 acres about an hour later.

When winds pushed the blaze west toward Pio Pico RV Resort and Campground, the facility was evacuated as a precaution.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen from many parts of the county.

No firefighter injuries were reported, but a Chula Vista police officer was seriously injured while directing traffic at a street closure near Otay Lakes Saturday afternoon.

There was no word when the fire would be extinguished.
