Facebook still working in Thailand despite block speculation

Morakot Kulthamyothin, president of the Thai Internet Service Provider Association (TISPA), which includes 19 landline and mobile ISPs, as well as major worldwide internet gateway operators covering 90 per cent of the country, said there was no plan to block access to Facebook in Thailand yet.

Facebook is still available in Thailand after concerns arose authorities would shut it down if the social media giant did not take down content deemed threatening to national security.

Tispa and internet gateway providers sent an email to the managing director of Facebook Thailand on Friday with the request and reportedly said 131 URLs that had been deemed inappropriate have yet to be removed.

The legal action would first be against Facebook Thailand and its partners, he said, according to The Bangkok Post.

Facebook users in Thailand can still access the sites despite the deadline to remove them passing.

If it determines the content does violate local laws it makes it unavailable in the country and notifies people who try to access it.

The Association stated that it was possible for them to meet this request by shutting off the content delivery network (CDN) that delivers Facebook's content to you.

The video, which shows the 64-year-old king walking alongside an unknown woman, has been geo-blocked by the government, although many copies have still circulated on social media.

Facebook is the dominant social network in Thailand with millions of users visiting the site every day.

Facebook is blocked or banned in several countries, notably China, which restricts online speech to preserve stability.

Thai citizens can be jailed between three and 15 years for insulting the country's monarch.

Sensitivity to public criticism of royal affairs was heightened after the much-loved former king died in October and his son, Maha Vajiralongkorn, took power.
