Earners under £80k given Labour 'no tax rise' guarantee

On the Andrew Marr show, McDonnell suggested that those earning over £80,000 would pay a "modest bit more" in tax to fund public services.

Labour's finance spokesman John McDonnell said he would guarantee no tax rises for five years for all those earning less than €80,000 pounds (RM450,510) if the party were elected.

The shadow chancellor refused to be drawn on how much Labour would increase taxes for the best paid 5 per cent, however, or detail how much it expected to raise...

On VAT changes to zero-rated items, Mr McDonnell said: "We've no plans to do that".

His announcement comes only days after the Chancellor Philip Hammond, who was forced to abandon his Budget increases in national insurance contributions, accused Labour of a tax and debt bombshell.

The Labour party said in a statement: "Only the highest earners will be asked to contribute more in tax to help fund our public services that have suffered at the hands of seven years of Tory austerity".

Mr McDonnell said each policy will be costed and have its funding source identified, adding: "The assurance I'm giving all the way through is that middle and lower earners will not have their tax increased and there'll be no stealth taxes either".

Mr McDonnell also ruled out a rise in employer's National Insurance contributions and said there are no plans to change Value-Added Tax on zero-rated items beyond the previously-announced measure to put Value-Added Tax on private school fees.

Nigeria's Buhari meets 82 freed schoolgirls
NAIJ.com had earlier reported that the girls arrived the Presidential Villa in Abuja to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari . Human rights groups have criticized the decision to keep the girls in custody in Abuja , almost 560 miles from Chibok.

"The Labour Party is now the party of low taxes for middle and low earners, while the Tories are the party of tax handouts for the super-rich and big corporations", he is expected to say.

The Conservatives said Labour would have to increase taxes to tackle what they said was a 45-billion-pound black hole in its spending plans.

Britain's opposition Labour Party Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell delivers a speech in London May 7, 2017.

Businesses would also be asked to stump up to pay for upgrades to Britain's infrastructure, such as high-speed broadband and new railways.

Commenting on the plan, Sir Vince Cable said: "Liberal Democrats believe that an important test of a civilised society is the way in which it cares for the elderly".

Announcing the proposed legislation, the Prime Minister said: "On my first day in Downing Street last July, I described shortfalls in mental health services as one of the burning injustices in our country".

"So today I am pledging to rip up the 1983 Act and introduce in its place a new law which finally confronts the discrimination and unnecessary detention that takes place too often".

On her party's chances at the election, she added: "We will win this, if we win it, on the basis of our policies and the fact that we have been able to get over our message on the doorstep showing people that it does not need to be this way".
