Don't drink the water! Diarrhea from swimming pools rising

There were twice as many outbreaks reported to CDC in 2016 compared with 2014, researchers from the CDC and from health department in Alabama, Arizona, and OH reported today in the latest issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).

At least 32 outbreaks caused by Cryptosporidium (also known as "Crypto") linked to swimming pools or water playgrounds in the United States were reported in 2016, compared with 16 outbreaks in 2014, according to preliminary data published today in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

"Swallowing just a mouthful of water contaminated with Crypto can make otherwise healthy people sick for up to three weeks with watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or vomiting, and can lead to dehydration".

The parasite can spread when people swallow something that has come into contact with feces from an infected person, such as pool water contaminated with diarrhea. They characterized "Crypto" as the most common cause of diarrheal illness linked to swimming pools and water playgrounds because it is not killed by chlorine and can survive for up to 10 days in pool water.

"Normal chlorine disinfection of swimming pool water does a great job in destroying most germs, but Crypto presents a special challenge", said Dr. Chris Wiant, chair of the Water Quality and Health Council.

"Caddyshack" said it best - "Doodie!" Either way, pool season's upon us and you need to take caution. Unlike other bugs that sometimes spread in pools, crypto is not quickly killed by chlorine.

"The oocysts have a hard outer shell, and that makes them very resistant to chemical disinfectants", Hlavsa said.

OH experienced a almost fivefold increase in cryptosporidiosis cases in 2016, with 1,940 reported cases compared with an average 399 cases during the prior four years.

Last year's crypto outbreaks numbered the highest this decade, according to the CDC report.

And in Alabama, 23 people were confirmed to have cryptosporidium infections and as many as 35 got sick from one single venue.

A survey conducted by the Water Quality Health Council found that 25 percent of adults would swim within an hour of having diarrhea.

If diarrhea is caused by Crypto, wait until two weeks after last incident to go swimming.

"Swim diapers do not contain diarrhea", she said. The CDC recommends avoiding swallowing any water and rinsing off in the shower once you get out. "If water is getting into that diaper, then water is getting out".

But do not be too quick to blame pool operators, Hlavsa said.
