Donald Trump refers to 'tapes' that may exist of James Comey conversations

Rosenstein wrote the memo outlining the case against Comey, reportedly after President Donald Trump directed Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to explain the case against Federal Bureau of Investigation director in writing.

Democrats cast the decision to fire Comey as an effort to obstruct the FBI's probe, a charge the White House has denied. He gave no indication that those discussions or others were taped.

"The aftermath" of Comey's firing, wrote the Post's Philip Rucker, "is a presidency rocked by its most serious self-inflicted crisis yet, exposing dysfunction and distrust within his West Wing and imperiling his agenda".

A White House official has said Trump is considering 11 people to replace Comey.

"The challenge they have is that the president sometimes moves so rapidly that they don't get a team around that gets it organized", said Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and Trump ally. Before Comey tapped him to lead the Richmond office in 2014, he was chief of the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section, investigating some of the highest profile cases against government officials and civil rights violations in recent years.

"I think the president wants loyalty to this country and to the rule of law", he said.

At first, the administration said that Rosenstein "made the recommendation, the president made a swift and decisive action and let Comey go".

The Federal Bureau of Investigation probe and parallel congressional investigations have cast a cloud over Trump's presidency since he took office on January 20, threatening to overwhelm his policy priorities.

The New York Times said Comey told associates he declined to make a pledge of loyalty to Trump when the president requested it while they dined just seven days after his inauguration.

McCabe assumed the position of acting director on Tuesday by statute after Trump dramatically fired Comey.

And at his NY office during the campaign, workers believed Trump had a system set up to record phone calls. Comey was not offered a chance to resign to spend more time with his family-the norm in these situations-or given the respectful send-off normally accorded a person in his position. That's according to two people familiar with the search process who weren't authorized to publicly discuss the deliberations and spoke on condition of anonymity.

President Donald Trump will read reports and recommendations from the interviews and then meet with a few leading candidates himself, the official said.

Swedish prosecutors drop rape probe against Julian Assange
Mr Assange was questioned six months ago in the presence of Swedish officials over a sex allegation, which he has always denied. WikiLeaks says the ball is now in Britain's court after Sweden's decision to drop its rape investigation of Julian Assange .

The No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, Richard Durbin, slammed the president after Friday's tweets, telling MSNBC that the president is "dangerous because he may be obstructing justice in terms of the investigation. and secondly his credibility has been destroyed".

The White House initially said Trump was compelled to fire Comey by a critical memo from the deputy attorney general on the director's handling of last year's investigation into Hillary Clinton's email.

In a statement, Durbin said that what he characterized as Trump's admission that he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation probe was "dangerously close to obstruction of justice".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders disputed the report and said the president would "never even suggest the expectation of personal loyalty".

McCabe also pointed out the remarkable nature of Trump's version of his conversations with Comey.

We have no idea whether in the intervening months James Comey has developed any greater insights into what actually transpired with respect to Russian meddling and the Trump campaign.

Trump named Michael Flynn - a controversial figure, partly because of his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin - as his national security adviser.

The president tweeted, "As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with ideal accuracy!"

"Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???"

For months, Trump dismissed the conclusion of the USA intelligence community that Russian Federation was ultimately responsible for hacking into computer systems and email accounts associated with the Democratic Party, then leaking information that was damaging to Hillary Clinton's campaign.

"Doing away with briefings would reduce accountability, transparency and the opportunity for Americans to see that, in the US system, no political figure is above being questioned", the statement read.
