Curtain falls on 'Greatest Show on Earth' after 146 years

After 146 years and having entertained generations of Americans, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus gave its final performance Sunday night.

That's because the show set to be performed at the Nassau County Coliseum in Uniondale, New York will be streamed live "in its entirety" on Facebook and YouTube.

"Let's celebrate the Greatest Show on Earth for the last time", he said.

Lacey said he and everyone who worked with the show were "all heartbroken" that is was all coming to an end, but that he personally hoped to "do this for many more years to come" because "I love doing what I do". "Thank you for all your hard work and all the joy you brought to us all".

A representative of Ringling Bros could not be reached on Sunday for comment, but in the past it defended its treatment of animals as humane.

Until Sunday, the company's train was the primary residence for most of the performers, who hail from 13 different countries.

The show is wrapping up with performers seeking jobs elsewhere while a circus spokesman says homes have been found for the animals.

The parent company of the circus, Feld Entertainment, Inc., cited the company's decision to phase out the elephant act as a major reason for lower ticket sales.

Any animals that are owned by the show's presenters will remain with them, he said. But it apparently lost the larger fight with public opinion. It's an institution that goes back to the 1800's - to the days of PT Barnum, and on Sunday, after almost a century and half, the Ringling Brothers Circus packed up its tent.

"I think it's ridiculous", said Eric Tann of Nesconset, who attended the show with his girlfriend and blamed the animal rights groups for the end of Ringling. The Feld family bought the Ringling circus in 1967.

At its prime, the circus was considered a family-friendly outing. He believes it grew outdated and hard for audiences with shorter attention spans. Yet many spectators said they came precisely because Sunday offered the final chance to witness a spectacle that once felt as if it might be around forever - until changing times and mores proved more powerful. "So you've got all these things working against it". It was sold to Mattel in 1971, but the Feld family continued to manage the shows. She returned to the table a few minutes later, only to discover the spacewalk act was still spacewalking. Animal rights activists have called it the "cruelest show on Earth".

Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus has two traveling circuses, "Circus XTREME" and "Out of This World", XTREME shutdown earlier this month at the Providence, Rhode Island Dunkin' Donuts Center. Now she is turning her efforts toward other American circuses that still use animals."We hope that those circuses will take Ringling as an example of what not to do", Byrne said. Support good, well-run zoos.

After almost 150 years, the show will not go on for the iconic Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which is performing its final act on Sunday. "They've always been an inspiration for us and they should really be an inspiration for everyone on how we conduct our lives".
