Centrist Macron victorious in French presidential election

Marine Le Pen's niece Marion Marechal-Le Pen, a National Front lawmaker, on Sunday said her aunt's softening of the party position on the euro came late in the presidential election campaign and was not well understood by French voters.

However, Macron prevailed with 66 percent of the vote to become France's youngest leader since Napoleon. "It is up to us to confront the globalist agenda of Macron".

"I am going to serve on your behalf with humility, with devotion, with determination", said Macron. "It is my responsibility to hear them". "I will work to rebuild the links between Europe and its citizens".

Moreover, he said France is at the forefront of fight against terrorism, both on its own soil and internationally. "France has won!" he said. "What we have done has no precedent, nor equivalent". Le Pen said her "historic and massive" score turned her party into "the leading opposition force against the new president's plans".

The following are selected comments from analysts on the implications for financial markets and economic policies from the French elections on Sunday. Le Pen's National Front won 35 percent of the vote, almost double what her father Jean-Marie secured in 2002, a result which hit the nation like an natural disaster at the time, triggering a broad "Republican front" to block him. As a effect, center-right President Jacques Chirac won a second term in a landslide with Jean-Marie Le Pen receiving less than 18 percent of the vote.

Meanwhile Ms Le Pen said the National Front must undergo a "deep transformation" in order to become a vibrant political force.

Instead, on Sunday, Le Pen was soundly defeated by Emmanuel Macron, a 39-year-old independent who ran on an unashamedly pro-European platform.

The online newspaper Gazeta.ru pictured Macron addressing French voters, saying the incoming president would "have to respond to the demands for change".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman called it a victory for a "strong united Europe" and for German-French friendship.

US President Donald Trump said in a tweet: "Congratulations to Emmanuel Macron on his big win today as the next President of France".

By contrast, Jacques Chirac was elected against Le Pen's father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, with 82.21 percent in 2002, amid a 20.29 percent abstention rate.
