Cardinals release reinstated linebacker Daryl Washington

"I want to thank the Cardinals organization, especially Mr. Bidwell and Steve Keim for drafting and believing in me, and their continued support", Washington said in a statement provided to PFT.

The 30-year-old was conditionally reinstated to the NFL in April after a three-year absence where he had repeated violations of the league's substance abuse policy.

After being released from the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, Daryl Washington is now on the free agent market and could potentially be a good fit with the Oakland Raiders.

In 2014, Washington pleaded guilty to those aggravated assault charges that left his ex-girlfriend with a broken collarbone. He was an All-Pro during the 2012 season, with nine sacks and one pick.

Some Cardinals fans took to social media to predict the linebacker would end up in New England and play for the Super Bowl champion Patriots, similar to the path of former Arizona receiver Michael Floyd, who was released a year ago.

Three years later, the Cardinals had a tough call whether or not to keep the linebacker on the roster. There's a lot more process that we're going to go through just than having a meeting.

The final tally has yet to be determined with a count of the absentee ballots and recounts in certain electoral districts. Even after the absentee ballots are counted, tight finishes could trigger judicial recounts.

I'm honored and humbled to be back in the National Football League. We're going to go through our process and hopefully have an answer one way or the other soon.

"Physically I'm in the best shape of my life and have maintained a strenuous six-day per week workout plan for over a year in anticipation of this day and next season".

Whether or not Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie feels Washington is worth the small risk he presents at this stage of his career, remains to be seen. He also added he intends to play at an All-Pro level next season.

Given the time away from playing and off-field history, it would be a surprise if a team gave Washington a shot to play in 2017.

If Washington can prove his value on the field, he should find a new home before too long.
