Bhubaneswar-bound AI flight returns to Mumbai due to suspected smoke

The aircraft was grounded for further examination.

The flight returned to Mumbai safely at 2.50 pm with full emergency procedure in place. A team from the engineering department is inspecting it.

A spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Ltd told The Hindu that a full emergency was declared at 2.30 p.m. for AI 669, which got airborne at 2.14 p.m. for Bhubaneswar. Following this, they sought the permission of the air traffic control to land in Mumbai. However, an Air India spokesperson in New Delhi confirmed that the aircraft made a safe landing and that all passengers were safe.

Airline sources said the aircraft had been taken to a remote bay where Air India's engineers would examine it. Preparations were on to accommodate the passengers on to another flight for Bhubaneswar. "However, the flight landed safely", the official said. Fire engines and ambulances were also kept on stand by alert.
