BC election brings uncertainty for business sector, pipelines

There's still a chance the final count could deliver another majority government to Christy Clark's Liberals, but it appears likely B.C. will be governed by the first minority in 65 years, putting the Greens in the powerful position of king-maker.

"A majority of British Columbians voted for a new government and I believe that is what they deserve", NDP leader Horgan told jubilant supporters to chants of "NDP, NDP".

"I will work with the other parties to do what needs to be done", provincial Premier and Liberal Party leader Christy Clark told supporters, saying she meant to continue as premier.

"And they reminded us tonight that we are far from flawless", Clark said, adding that she was willing to work with the other parties to govern. "I've worked with Dr. Weaver in the past and he's a smart and thoughtful guy".

Liberal Leader Christy Clark campaigned on her party's record of a strong economy while NDP Leader John Horgan called for a change at the legislature after 16 years in Opposition. "We've got to put a government forward that British Columbians can be proud of and i" m going to be a part of that", Olsen said.

Even if absentee ballots and recounts were to unfortunately give Clark a bare majority, there is no way the B.C. Liberals can continue for long.

Elections BC says absentee ballots won't be counted until May 22, and there may be recounts in some close ridings.

The NDP won one riding by only nine votes, making a recount a certainty that will determine the difference between a minority and an ultra-thin majority if it were to flip to the Liberals.

Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose suggested Wednesday she's anxious what the British Columbia election result means for Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline, with the possibility the Greens could help the NDP form a minority government. He could extract a promise that the Liberals would act on some key Green policies - like limits on corporate and union campaign donations.

"There's no declaring a win, but man, we have a lot to celebrate", Leonard said at a post-election party at The Avalanche.

This election was Clark's second as premier.

Weaver, at his celebration on Vancouver Island, said he had talked with both Clark and Horgan.

A potential minority government is not something anyone could have prepared for, Krog added.

Weaver said he's prepared to negotiate with both the Liberals and NDP to see which has the most in common with the Green platform.

However, if the results are confirmed, Harrison said the Liberals and New Democrats may be forced to compromise with the Greens or face another election. As well, the Liberals are in support of the expansion of the Site C Dam, while the two other parties are opposed to it.

Horgan said that the NDP and the Green Party can work on that initiative in the legislature.

Weaver said negotiations on what his party's role would be would begin Wednesday.

There is now a clear urban-rural divide across the province electoral slate, according to B.C. pollsters.

Forty Liberals were elected to the legislature compared with 38 New Democrats, with the NDP gaining ground in the seat-rich Lower Mainland where it had focused its campaign. (TSX:WTE), since Clark has proposed a hefty levy on US coal shipments through the port in response to the softwood lumber dispute.

While still short of the four seats needed for official party status, Weaver was pleased with the "first ever Green elected caucus in North America". The NDP had only a marginal 0.14 per cent bump in popular support to 39.85 per cent.
