'All roads should lead to universal healthcare,' says new World Health Organization chief

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who served as as Minister of Health, Ethiopia, from 2005-2012, was elected as new Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) by the member states.

For the first time in its 69-year-old history, an African national will lead the World Health Organization.

The new head of the World Health Organization doesn't believe the Trump administration's calls to slash funding for global aid and United Nations agencies like his is a "closed issue". Equally important, he must strengthen the WHO's gender balance and engagement with young people and civil society not just because of it is the right thing to do, but the sound thing to do, " said Katja Iversen, president/CEO of Women Deliver.

The former Ethiopian health minister, who is now the first African director-general of WHO, was competing with Sania Nishtar, a cardiologist from Pakistan, and David Nabarro, a physician and WHO veteran from Britain who led the U.N.'s response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014, according to NPR.

Adhanom was recently at the helm of drafting the AU Agenda 2063, which represents the strategic framework guiding Africa's development priorities for the next 50 years, while serving as Chair of the Executive Council of the AU, said the statement.

As Minister of Health, Ethiopia, Tedros led a comprehensive reform effort of the country's health system, including the expansion of the country's health infrastructure, creating 3,500 health centers and 16,000 health posts; expanded the health workforce by 38,000 health extension workers; and initiated financing mechanisms to expand health insurance coverage.

His leadership during this time was praised by former USAID administrator Ariel Pablos-Mendez, who wrote in an opinion piece for CNN: "Ethiopia has fallen short in some health markers... but by nearly any measure, it is showing the way to a new era in world health".

Kushner sought Russian Federation back channel, report claims
White House officials declined to comment on Saturday, ahead of Trump's return to Washington following his first overseas trip. The Senate and House Intelligence Committees also are investigating, but not with an eye to bringing criminal charges.

"The campaign has ended, as you know, officially, but I think the work begins actually now".

Tedros joined the Ministry of Health in 1986, after graduating from the University of Asmara.

One of the major difficulties is that of money.

US President Donald Trump's 2018 budget request, presented Tuesday, calls for substantial cuts in contributions to worldwide organisations from Washington, which has always been the UN's biggest financial backer.

"I am a strong believer that there should be an exit strategy, that means a gradual exit that avoids any shocks", he said.

The United States is the biggest World Health Organization donor. "When there are finance cuts like this, the most affected are the poor".

"Congratulations to Dr. Tedros on your election as DG of WHO". Instead, he told Tedros the United States looked forward to working with him on changing the World Health Organization for the better.
