A timeline of events that led up to Comey's firing

The White House first said this week that Trump made the move because of a negative memo about Comey from the Justice Department, only to have the president later say he made the decision before seeing the memo.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he could announce a replacement for FBI Director James Comey by May 19, when he is due to begin his first overseas trip as president.

President Donald Trump took to twitter Friday morning to issue a dire warning to former FBI Director James Comey about trying to influence media coverage of his firing.

The Intelligence Committee is in the midst of a broad investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and ties with Trump's campaign.

Spicer's conspicuous non-denial drew comparisons to the secretly-taped conversations and telephone calls that led to President Richard Nixon's downfall in the Watergate scandal in 1972.

Among those also expected on Saturday were acting Federal Bureau of Investigation director Andrew McCabe, Michael J Garcia, an associate judge on New York's highest court, and Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the number two Senate leader and a former state attorney general.

Mr Garcia is a former NY prosecutor and Ms Fisher was an assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's criminal division.

Iran: Rouhani leads initial count; over 70 percent turnout
Rouhani, considered a moderate, was a key architect of the 2015 nuclear deal with the USA , the European Union and other partners. Rouhani, meanwhile, is essentially running for re-election as an outsider, and is backed by Iran's reformist camp.

Defence lawyer Alice Fisher was the first candidate interviewed at the justice department, USA media report.

Lawmakers from both parties reprimanded Trump's actions last week, which included shifting explanations from the White House for Comey's dismissal and an ominous tweet by Trump that warned Comey against leaks to the press because he may have "tapes" of their conversations.

The president is reported to have asked Comey whether he could be loyal to him during a dinner meeting in February shortly after his inauguration.

A source close to Comey told NBC News that Comey "hopes there are tapes".

The tweet came a day after The New York Times reported that Trump had demanded that Comey pledge his loyalty to him at a private dinner at the White House on January 27. In questions about whether Trump tapes conversations, he didn't deny.

The president, who has been angered by continuing news coverage of the Russian Federation investigation, also threatened to cancel press briefings as his communications team faced criticism for issuing different versions of the decision to fire Mr Comey.
