62 per cent of French Catholics voted for Macron

Emmanuel Macron has been elected the president of France, defeating Marine Le Pen, a far-right nationalist who threatened to take France out of the European Union.

European shares look set to advance, with financial spread betters expecting a 0.9 percent gain in France´s CAC, up 0.8 percent in Germany´s DAX and 0.4 percent higher in Britain´s FTSE. (Onward!), a party with no parliamentarians at all, although a number are on the ballot for next month's parliamentarian election.

If Macron's party performs poorly, he could also be forced to form a coalition, a common occurrence in many European countries but something very unusual in France. With at least five political formations contesting all 577 seats, a hung parliament could emerge. If so, he'll be able to choose a prime minister.

The Police on Monday said a hundred and forty-one people were arrested in Paris after trouble flared overnight following Emmanuel Macron's victory in France's presidential election. In interviews on Monday her campaign director David Rachline said the party founded by her father would get a new name as bait to pull in a broader spectrum of supporters in France.

Reuters reported that more than 11 percent of voters chose neither Macron nor Le Pen.

Monday was a French national holiday marking decades of peace in Western Europe, something Mr Macron made a cornerstone of his campaign against Ms Le Pen's brand of nationalist populism.

Macron wins French presidency but hurdles remain in campaign to govern
Such talk is premature, though, for whilst Macron may have won the battle against the far-right, the war has only just begun. In his victory speech, Macron vowed to "rebuild the relationship between Europe and the peoples that make it".

Le Pen told party backers that the National Front party would undergo a "profound transformation" following the loss. "I'll be at the head of this fight", she said.

Sylvie Goulard, a French deputy to the European Parliament, said Macron would make Berlin, Germany, his first official visit, with perhaps a stop to see French troops stationed overseas as well.

Marine Le Pen's high-spending, anti-globalisation "France-first" policies appealed to many poorer members of society, but it wasn't enough to win her the presidency.

Mrs May has called an early election for June 8, arguing that her Conservatives need a bigger majority in order to stand firm against - and strike deals with - the EU.

The euro climbed to $1.1022, its highest level in six months and its first break above $1.10 since the US presidential election.
