'Vistaar Yatra': Trinamool even worse than Left, says BJP chief Amit Shah

Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Tuesday kicked off the campaign for the 2019 general election from Naxalbari-the symbolic epicentre of a movement 50 years ago which transformed West Bengal's politics forever.

Banerjee criticised Shah's visit to Naxalbari: "The secret understanding between CPI (M) and BJP is clear as Shah chose Naxalbari to address the party workers".

The Trinamool Congress-ruled state is among the five states, including Odisha and Telangana, where he will spend three-day each as he looks to strengthen the party in the states where it has been traditionally weak, with an eye on the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Sitting on the floor of Raju Mahali's house at Dakkhin Katiajote village in Naxalbari, he had a lunch of rice, moong dal, "potol" (a kind of gourd) fry, squash curry, salad and papad, served on a banana leaf. But the importance was given to the grassroots people's opinion and their grievances against the Mamata Banerjee government.

Sources said the party was banking on Shah's outreach programme - designed on the lines of the BJP's strategy of social engineering conceived by the leader in Uttar Pradesh - for its expansion in Bengal. "The people of the country will witness it", claimed Shah.

"I want to tell the Trinamool Congress leaders that the more you try to dominate, the more you carry out injustice, the lotus will bloom. Seeing the spontaneous response of the people here today, we are sure lotuses will bloom here", he said.

EU in focus as French presidential candidates face off
Polls are still nail-bitingly tight, so the election result is far from as clear-cut as it has looked in previous years. Le Pen's says she wants to "restore order in France " and will "protect" the French against terror and economic ruin.

"The TMC is unleashing violence but in the end, the BJP's victory in Bengal is certain. No one can block its way forward", he said.

Shah was accompanied by BJP Bengal President Dilip Ghosh.

Describing Naxalbari as one of the last frontier villages in the country, sharing borders with Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh, Shah asserted that the central government led by Narendra Modi has been working to reach out to all such villages in the country through its developmental programme.

Talking about Modi's "Sabka sath sabka vikas" slogan, he said development was reaching "every nook and corner" of the country, but the TMC government was "not allowing" it to happen in Bengal.

Shah, on the second day of his tour would visit five residences of booth number 269 of Bhawanipore Assembly, which is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's assembly constituency.

"Over the next three days, as a vistarak, I would be visiting several booths, interacting with our karyakartas and strengthening our party", the BJP president said. "Two were from Cooch Behar and another was from Nadia district", the West Bengal CM said.
