Mallya, declared a proclaimed offender, was arrested in London by Scotland Yard on India's request for his extradition on fraud charges.
Following is the legal twists and turns leading up to the arrest of liquor baron Vijay Vittal Mallya in London.
"Officers from the metropolitan police's extradition unit have this morning arrested a man on an extraction warrant".
Mallya, in a message on Twitter, called the news of his arrest "usual Indian media hype". He was then whisked away to a local police station from where he was taken to the Westminster Magistrates' Court that opened on Tuesday after the long Easter weekend. However, officials said that the bail is not something to be seen as a relief to Mallya.
"The Indian Government, in order to get Vijay Mallya back to India, had followed all the legal procedures properly".
While the actual extradition will depend on the United Kingdom courts, sources have said there was political will to support the process.
However, following the routine concerning with financial crimes, the court after three hours of his arrest granted conditional bail to Mallya on a Rs 5.4-crore bond and stiff terms until May 17 to Mallya. The liquor baron, however, fled the country days before the apex court took up the case against him.

"The court usually focuses on whether there is sufficient evidence of criminality to extradite someone", said Andrew Smith, a partner at London law firm Corker Binning.

As the extradition process now starts in Mallya's case, the CBI and Indian High Commission will present its case, said a government functionary.
