Tesla issued a voluntary recall Thursday for 53,000 vehicles built in 2016 for a faulty parking brake that could remain engaged.
Shares in the U.S. vehicle maker dipped 1.12 per cent at $302.08 on the news.
"In order to be overly cautious, we are going to be proactively replacing these parts to ensure that no issues arise", the company said.
If the gear were to break, the parking brake would continue to keep the auto from moving, but the parking brake would be stuck in place, it added.
"While less than 5 percent of the vehicles being recalled may be affected by this issue, we are recalling 53,000 vehicles total out of an abundance of caution", Tesla added. The company says that less than 5 percent cars are likely to actually have been affected by the problem however, considering the extreme difficulty in testing each individual vehicle, it decided that a recall was actually the best option.
Tesla is insisting the potential problem doesn't constitute a safety issue, and that there have been no reported instances of the potentially problematic parking brake failing to hold a vehicle or messing with the braking performance in general.

And at first, he and Berry were somewhat tepid with their remarks about Texas A&M pass rusher Myles Garrett . I'd bet money they end up taking Garrett, but maybe someone surprises them and offers a boatload of picks.
Last year, the company recalled 2,700 Model X vehicles after it learnt that the cars' third row seats could unlatch and fold over to the second row. Engineers believe a small gear, perhaps improperly built by a supplier, is to blame. The company's mobile technicians will be able to check the vehicles quickly and deal with any Model S or Model X customer cars that need a fix. The automaker is mailing an official recall notice to owners, telling them how to get the parking brakes replaced.
Late past year, Tesla acquired Germany's Groham Engineering and formed Tesla Advanced Automation Germany.
Musk said the electric semi-truck is due out in September, and the unveiling of its electric pickup truck in 18 to 24 months.
How many vehicles does Tesla estimate to be affected?
According to CNET's Road Show, the fix takes about 45 minutes once Tesla starts working on a vehicle, as all it requires is both electric parking brakes be replaced with new units.
